Whenever I receive a Dolby Digital signal on a DRD450RG, the audio
periodically cuts out. Anybody had this problem before? If this is
another RCA quality thing, can anybody suggest a good box with the
optical output and none of the other stuff (Tivo, etc.)?

I do, but I really don't subscribe to any of the movie channels that have the
5.1 DD audio. I did however get a chance to check it out a few times while
they were giving away some free movie time during a couple of weekends a
little while back. I never noticed any problem with breakup, on the other
hand, I don't beleive that the sound quality of the 5.1 DD audio is at as high
of a bit rate like you would find on a DVD or even better, a LD.
DVDs and LD can carry the same DD 5.1 quality of audio, however just because
it's 5.1 DD, does not mean that they both will have the same bitrate in that
soundtrack, and the same differences happen with the 5.1 DD in the satellite
signals.

That sounds like pretty good strength, doubt you can improve.

My Sony A-65 has very good sound via the optical, but suffers from a variety
of other software bugs. I always suspected that the occasional dropouts are
due to the channel being compressed to the point of the breakup, DD takes a
lot of bandwidth. Try to increase your signal strength of you can.

The problem happens on all channels with a dolby digital signal. I
talked to Directv about the problem and they acknowledged it, but
their reason is never the same. I was first told it was a problem
with the signal they were receiving and then I was told a software fix
would be coming this week (I have faithfully checked the software
revision every morning and still haven't seen an update). If the
problem is with the signal they are receiving, how can a software fix
take care of it? Plus, does this mean every signal they receive in
dolby digital is having a problem? My guess is this is another RCA
quality control thing but I wanted to see if anybody else is having
the issue to make sure. This is the only problem I have with this box
(picture is fantastic) so I really don't want to trade this one for a
box with a whole new set of problems. Anybody out there have
experience with this Hughes box?

My DRD485RG does have dropouts on some dolby digital channels.
Usually the STARZ/Encore and Showtime channels may once in a while cut
out, but not always. I don't remember having problems with HBO. I
always figured that it was transmission problems, not receiving, but
with the number of other issues with these RCA units, I could be
wrong. What channels do you notice the problems on?
If you're looking for a different DD box, maybe the Hughes GCEB0 (only
$80 at Orbit). I am currently waiting for my new Directv DVR to come
in at CC to replace my RCA unit.
