Have two gpsmap 168 that were in a boat with an outboard motor charging problem that suppied more than 18 volts. Both units would say Voltage too high then turn off. Now both units turn on but after a 30-60 seconds the screen goes to one solid thin line from top to bottom. the units will not turn completely off or turn back on. If you remove from power then apply power again the units will turn back on but 30-60 seconds later...same thing
According to Garmin technical support your thin black line (my problem too) is due to a change made by the goverment to the waas correction. Turn WAAS off. Software update coming (soon I hope)
This may help. Mine has the GPS antenna build into the bracket at the back. I removed the bracket and the unit did not go into the error screen and the sounder worked fine. The GPS would not locate but it has not antenna attached so DOH!! I have orderd a new antenna with the BNC connector and will post if that fixes the problem. At this point I'm guessing its a blow GPS antenna.
Dave
yep i added a new GPS antenna and it wokred like a champ again. It seems in my case i had blown the antenna and nothing else.
The best way to test this would be to disconnect the antenna (if you have 168 with the antenna built onto the mounting bracket you'll need to remove the 4 screws on the back of the mount, remove it and unplug it) power the unit up and see if you get the blank screen with the line running down it or if you get the message it cannot find its location. If its the location message you can get another antenna for about $25 from ebay with the BNC connector on it as i did and I'm up and running!!

i have the same issue... i thinik it was when the polarity was reversed by mistake.. dont know how to fix this but would love to know...
Garmin 168 GPS/SOUNDER external antenna. Unit locks up with one vertical line through screen after 8 or more satellites lock on. I turned off WAAS and problem stopped. I would like to have my WAAS back.
