I have a similar problem, so I will answer the questions based on my issues:

Is there any light when you open the door? Yes
    Is the display lit? Yes
Before when it was not heating, did the inside light and turntable come on when you tried to cook? Yes
Did the timer count down? Yes
Was it making any unusual noise or was it louder or quieter than usual? Yes, it makes a lower pitched louder noise than usual.
What is your model number? Spacemaker xl1800

I have the exact same problem. Electronically everything seems to work fine, but the food won't heat. A low pitched louder than usual sound begins 5 seconds into the heating process.

    To mattgjackson:

A GE model number will be something like JVM1860wh001 and it's found on a tag usually inside the cavity or around the door frame.

Spacemaker XL1800 is kind of a model name.

The lower pitched noise, though is a clue...

It sounds like a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron.

The magnetron should have a nine-year warranty.

Please reply back with your true model number so we can help you better.

These answers will help me judge whether it's in the high voltage
section (magnetron, transformer, or diode) or the control section
(door switch or control board relay or connection).

SOURCE: microwave running not heating

The motor has an issue. Do you hear the sound like its taking the load

SOURCE: wont heat food

It could be that the "grinding" noise was actually "arcing" taking place inside the cavity or uder the cover. The magnatron is possibly damaged or the h.v. diode. Should be repaired by qualified repairman

SOURCE: Spacemaker (JVM1871SK) 1800 Microwave doesn't microwave

Remove the case and see if you can localize the smell. Likely suspects are a shorted high voltage diode (replace) or a shorted stirrer bearing (replace stirrer)--a fan-like device located within the sheet metal waveguide near where the microwaves enter the cooking cavity. Make sure to have a cup of cold water in the cooking cavity when looking for problems. The problem could also be the high voltage transformer or the high voltage capacitor, but these are more rare problems. There are no radiation problems with the case off, but there are high voltages associated with the magnetron and it's power supply.

My microwave doesnt work

If you hear an unusual buzzing noise, the magnetron (the component that actually generates the microwaves) or other electronic module may be broken. This is not easily fixed; contact a service technician.

My microwave starts however food does not heat up.

Micro wave as the name suggests produces heat when the micro waves aimed at an object causes the water molecules inside the object to vibrate hence producing heat. The gadget responsible is the magnetron. If your magnetron is not receiving ht voltage or receiving but faulty, then your micro wave wont work please take precaution when opening micro wave due to high voltage caps that remain charged sometimes even when it is off.check the high voltage fuse/ diode and capacitor if they are fine and the step up trans former o.k then the only option is to replace the magnetron

Why would my microwave no longer heat or cook?

micro waves use a tube inside that generates micro waves and like a light bulb they eventually blow out. the tube is not considered replaceable and cheaper to just get new unit.

The microwave appears to be working but it is not heating up the food.

Several things can be wrong, 1st the diode which connects to the capacitor may be bad, the capacitor may be bad or the magnatron may be bad. Unless you are very very familiar with micro waves and high power I suggest a qualified appliance tech. Even with micro wave unplugged the high voltage area which all 3 of these components are can kill or cause serious injury. Sorry but do not feel comfortable telling you how to get to these for your own safety.

Sparks and strange noise when microwave is turned on even when empty inside. i have a ge jvm1850smss over the oven microwave.

YOU SHOULD NOT RUN MICRO WITHOUT ANY THING IN IT / THIS WILL OVER LOAD THE MAG TUBE . AND SOME TIMES FRY IT .. The sparking and arcing is probably a bad wave guide . this is sometimes caused by food splater / it gets in the cracks and corners and then cooks till it truns to carbon which conduts the micro's and thus arching .. clean it good and touch up any burns in the metal and repl wave guide cover. mm hope this will help .. mm
