Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K17 Device

I have a Vaio laptop, and it suddenly stopped recognizing when there is a CD in the CD/DVD drive. My husband says it's probably the driver. In Device Manger, it says the driver is the above captioned subject. I can't find it anywhere to update it or reinstall it, if that's the problem. What should I do?

I have no technical expertise with computers, so I could just be howling at the moon. Any suggestions as to what else I should check? It might not be the driver, but I don't know where else to start.

Thanks!

This is what you can try:

1. do a windows update and make sure your windows is updated. sometimes also some updates may have been installed for your hardware, check if there was any update done recently for your cd/dvd drive if there was one and it may have been at the same time the device stopped working rollback the driver: (to rollback the driver go into device manager>go to the device> right click and go to properties, look for a botton that says driver rollback, click on it and let windows go back to the previous driver version (that should still be there) and see if that corrects the problem by testing the drive.

2. first use system restore to make a restore point for you to go back if something does not go as expected then go to device manager right click on the cd/dvd drive and click uninstall.
then at the top, go into actions>scan for hardware changes... your system should look for the uninstalled drive and should reinstall it by itself (you may have to restart the sytem) (hopefully that will reset it) check in device manager that once again your drivers are installed for the cd/dvd drive and test to see if the drive works again.

3. if for some reason you're not able to get the drivers to reinstall follow these instructions (don't panic you still have you're restore point so no worries):
http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/removable-media-drives/228019-pioneer-dvd-rw-dvr-k17-ata-won-t-install-drivers.html
then test the drive after reboot making sure you check that drivers are installed and working for this device.

4. if rollingback or reinstalling the driver does not fix it it could be possibly a virus so get your system cleaned up with AVG or AVAST (which are free)

5. it could be a hardware problem in which case you may need to replace the actual drive by having the sony do it (hopefully you're still within warranty)

good luck

You get the driver cd to download the CD/DVD drive in your laptop when you install it.you just have to install it again in your laptop and it will work properly as usual.the old driver which you have loaded before is got corrupted and not supporting your laptop.your husband is very correct its the driver problem.just reinstall the driver and it will work.

feel free for further queries.

Create a folder on your desk top and name it pioneer drivers. In device manager>cd/dvd drives>your model. Right click on your installed device and choose un-install. To get your software go here:
http://www.bioticaindia.com/k17.html Navigate to your software and download to the folder you created on your desktop. Reboot> windows will detect new software and ask you if you have the manufacturers install cd or a location to check for install files. Direct the wizard to your new folder and follow the rest of the setup, done.

Hi,

Could be a dirty lens inside the CD/DVD drive. There are CD disc cleaners available in most computer shops and would do the job.

Incidentally, there is no need to install or update the driver, they are built-into the Operating System.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi there,

i would recommend reinstalling it. i had a similar problem with my Toshiba driver for my wireless laptop. i unistalled it and reinstalled it. since your computer is new, it will reinstall it by itself.

go into your control panel and click on add/remove programs.
find the device and click remove
then restart you pc and im assuming that you have Windows Vista
Vista will automatically reinstall the device
there are many reasons why that happened and it's mostly bugs in Visa itself

let me know how it turns out.

thanks

Pioneer DVD R/RW drive DVR-K17LA not reading

Normally no drivers are needed for CD drives other than the ones built into Windows. It might be a dirty lens that is causing the trouble. When the tray opens on a laptop CD drive the lens is exposed and can get touched or exposed to dirt. Try gently cleaning it with a cotton swab to brush off the lens. If the problem continues, the laser may have worn out and is too weak to read now. You can find replacement drives online, or use a USB plug-in external drive.

I have the same problem. Has anyone found a solution? I have an HP Notebook dv6700 with a Pioneer DVDRW [DVR-K17B ATA Device]. For the past few months I haven't been able to burn anything to disc. I can't find any firmware updates online. I'm not sure if I need to buy a new drive?

Thank you in advance for any feedback.

What brand of media are you using?

You are burning at 2x because that is the highest that this drive supports.

You would also want to instruct Nero to Verify by ticking the check box and either finalize disc or make it mulitsession, if your burner supports multisession DVDs
