More than likely you have quit a few programs opening when windows opens, let start by turning off the extra stuff so that you can free up some resources:: (not uninstalling or deleting)

click start - run - type msconfig (in the text box) when the system configurator opens, select the startup tab - click on the disable all button - click apply - click OK - restart the computer - when it restarts you will get a msg stating "you have used the system configuration utility to change the way windows starts" THIS IS NORMAL. just check the box telling windows not to tell you everytime it happens and procede on.

now try a dvd..

This sounds like your dvd drive stopped working. try with different cds or dvds. If not there is a complicated way but if you are not familiar with computers don't do that. A service technician can easily solve it for you.

DVD in my computer will show video but no sound. Will play CD with sound.

If CD plays fine but DVD doesn't then probably it's the DVD that has a problem and not the computer. Does that happen with all your DVDs?

Dvds won't play properly and sound isn't right

Sounds like you may have an issue with it reading discs. It can probably play CDs fine because it's fast enough to buffer ahead of it since an audio CD isn't very much data compared to a DVD. Try cleaning the laser lens with a dry paper towel first (not moist or a dusty kleenex). If that doesn't seem to clean it, or you have visible smears or smudges on it, you may want to try a very very moist (barely the next level above dry) paper towel, then try it immediately.

If that doesn't solve the problem, try different DVD software (VLC Media Player, perhaps) or try a different DVD if you haven't already.

My dvd drive in my computer won't play dvds

1. Completely remove any dvd/cd player/burner softwares (i.e. Nero, Power DVD, etc.).
2. Go to device manager and remove your DVD/CD device from the device list
3. Restart you laptop
4. Windows will then try to reinstall the device drivers again for the DVD drive.
5. After another restart, then reinstall your dvd softwares again.
