Question about Seagate HDD 40GB 7200RPM ATA100 2MB (ST340014AP) Hard Drive

1 Answer

Dual seagate hd on pl 2506 controller, only one drive detected.

I contacted the manufacturer of the chipset in my external hd enclosure. The chipset is PL2506. It says it can handle two ide drives on the same controller. Question is this: I have two identical seagate 40 gigs attached to the enclosure. The only drive that is detected is the one jumpered as master. It doesn't matter what the second drive is jumpered as. It isn't detected unless I switch the master from one drive to the other. Then the first isnt detected. It's like the controller is refusing to recognize the attached slave. What wire(s) need to be present/absent in a 40 conductor ide cable for this to work?

    I tried that... read the question a little better... I want to know why the controller is refusing to "see" the second drive, regardless of cable position and jumper position.

  • danman1453 Oct 12, 2008

    ok, just tried switching cables... cable works in desktop. desktop cable is same result in external. only master is detected.

  • danman1453 Oct 12, 2008

    the only time there are no jumpers is slave. already tried cable select. would the models of the hds be helpful?

What external drive enclosure would support a seagate 4200.2 hard drive

Hi Larry

There are generally 2 types (sizes) of hard drive. 2.5 Inch & 3.5 inch. Any 3.5" HD enclosure these days should handle either size.
The preferred current connector on a HD is SATA (Serial ATA)This small connector on the HD is universal so it's easy to connect a drive. 3.5" HD is preferable for backups & archive as it is faster, more reliable and less prone to bumps. They run on 12v&5v
The Pocket type 2.5" run on 5v and are not as fast or secure.

My preferred Enclosure that I use is more of a Universal Dock.
Either drive can be plugged in at any time. This is great for allowing the use of several drives for different purposes. Eg
A Movies Drive. A Backup Drive. A Music Drive or a Bootable External OS in case of problems. Buy USB3 Port Interface where possible or FireWire as the backup speed is Faster
Drives not in use get wrapped in antistatic bag or tinfoil & kept in secure location.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a Bootable copy of OSX.
Great program... used it for years. Demo is free and fully usable.

Hope this helps

My seagate momentus 5400.2 external hard disk can't be detected by any computer. doesnt show up in the device manager, or anything. the light is on, for some reason, sometimes it blinks red/green,...

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

The external storage device has several major components:
* USB cable
* external power-supply
* disk-drive inside the enclosure
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.
Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.
Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.
Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.
Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.
Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.
Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive. Seagate's web-site has an data-recovery offer: no charge if we cannot recover your files.

Connect it to another computer, to see if the Seagate device works at all.

If not, then disassemble the enclosure, remove the disk-drive, purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it into the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Is the manufacturer's warranty still valid? If so, exercise the warranty, to get a replacement, at minimal cost to you.

My external hard drive is unreadable

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

Windows xp drivers for seagate ST3160203U2-RK

Drivers are not needed for this Ext HDD.
If you go to your Computer Management>Storage Devices,you will have to assign a Drive letter for it to show in your "My Computer" as a External Hard Drive.
Also ensure that drive is set as "slave" and do not connect until computer is booted to Desktop.
All changes will take effect after reboot.
