Question about Maytag MMV4205 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Night light bulb blew and when I put in a replacement (from Maytag) it is on all the time. The 3-stage light switch does not change the light on off or to the night light setting.

Thanks for the idea, unfortunately, it didn't work. Any other thoughts would be appreciated. Maytag's answer was to bring it in for service!

Still not working. I'm debating whether to open it up or just live without the light. Any suggestions would still be appreciated,

This may not help but will throw it out there ... Have you tried unplugging the micro for a little while and then plugging it back in? The switch may not control the light directly but may be through a relay and that may be stuck on... Give it a try and let us know if the power down/up cycle helps.. If it doesn't..I'll dig in deeper and look at the circuit logic to see if I can find the root cause..

    Hello rpaper,

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you ( had to marry off one of my daughters so that took precedence). Anyway, I am back now and wondering where we stand on your light situation. Are you still having a problem? If so, please get back to me and I will examine the circuitry in more depth until we get you going.

    Hi RP,

Now that I know where we stand...I'll check out the control logic for the bulb and get back to you with some ideas,,, A word to the wise thou, if you feel compelled to open up the circuit compartment, be aware that there are dangerous voltages in there even after unplugging ( HV Capacitor etc) so make sure you know what NOT to touch...

Full plate of events today but will try to get some time to scope out the situation.. hang in there..

Some things are better in the dark,.,, My cooking is one of them..

    Later my friend...

The night light switch on my maytag over the range microwave will not work

I am assuming you changed the bulb. Anything that sits over a stove will become mucked up with grease and cooking oils etc. That can prevent the bulb from seating in the socket, the switch from making contact, etc. Unplug the unit, remove the bulb and get int here to clean the grease out. That should fix it.

Lights on bottom don't work. Sockets fell apart and vent fan now does not work. A bulb blew out , then all of this happened.

We see and repair this a lot. The problem is on the control board, which we regularly repair for $39.95 nationwide.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

The lights can can be inoperable or stuck on or stuck in "night light" mode. Sometimes this will similarly affect the fan operation or inside light, too.

We'd also recommend buying top-quality bulbs.

They can blow if subjected to vibration such as door slamming or a weak floor, or electrical fluctuation, especially if they are cheap bulbs or they are left on all night.

Instead of having the board repaired, you can order a new control circuit board / smart board if that's economical, and since your sockets are bad, they will need to be replaced, too.

You can find links to helpful exploded view diagrams and part ordering help here. I recommend that you bookmark that link to your

There's a YouTube video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If you're changing the board yourself, you'll need to detach the keypad connector:

Some connectors will have a lock.

The hood light blew and I replaced it. It worked

The cause could be anything from defective bulbs(least likely, to a bad bulb socket or vibration during operation. A voltage measurment at the bulb will tell you if it is getting too much.

Whirlpool MH7140XFQ-1 light does not switch from regular to night

If there are 2 bulbs try swapping them around. If the night light works then you just need a bulb. Take the bad one with you and match it up at a parts store. Some actually have a dimmer circuit programmed in the board and that will not be a easy fix. Do you hear a click when you try to activate the night mode? If you cannot find a bulb or do not want to replace or repair the unit just disclose the non working light. I was in real estate for a couple years and a burned out bulb will not be a deal breaker as long as they are told up front.

Microwave PLMVZ169 GCB night light push button does not work. Replace the light bulb. Push button still does not work. The work light does when I push the night light it stays on. Just wondering how to...

Q - While trying to change the light bulb on the oven, the bulb broke. When it did, it threw the circuit breaker and the whole oven went out. After resetting the breaker, everything on the oven works except there is no power to either light socket. Any ideas or suggestions on what to replace?
A - You tried to change the light bulbs with the power still on.....tsk tsk!!
Hate to say this....but probably blew out part of the circuit on the smart board ( the brains behind the key panel you touch ) when the short blew. The light relay on the smart board may have been damaged but 9 out of 10 times when I check them, the board itself is damaged.
check out this problem.
please do rate the solution.thank you for using fixya.keep updated.thanks,

Light socket is dead on my Maytag

Yes, this is caused by not disconnecting the microwave from the power line when removing or installing a bulb or by the filaments shorting when the bulb blows. This is a problem with the control panel assembly, which we repair nationwide for $39.95. If you or a friend decide to send it to us, we have *critical* safety and disassembly info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa:
