Ice and water dispensing problem; compressor shuts off when paddle pressed but dispensing is sporadic

Due to sporadic water and ice dispenser problems, I ordered and replaced the interface display circuit board but ...that fixed nothing. When I push the dispenser paddle, no ice will dispense but water will dispense sporadically. Whenever I push in the dispenser, the dispenser light will come on but then dim and if the compressor is running, it will shut down the compressor until the light timer shuts off....then the compressor revs up again. If I switch the panel to turn on the light only, the same dimming and compressor shut down occurs. The ice maker makes ice fine and sometimes the water will dispense fine but then seconds later will not.

Could the problem be as simple as the simple inexpensive switch up where the dispenser paddle triggers, or could it be the main circuit board or some solenoid? Something drags down the power source.

Your help would be much appreciated. I hate to keep buying parts with no success.

I have checked the ice bin auger and that is not jammed up. When I select ice (crushed or cubes)nothing even tries to turn or start.

What concerns me is that even if I just turn on the dispenser light, it dims and the compressor stops until I turn the light off again. Then the compressor revs up again. This indicates to me that the switch for the dispenser paddle is not the problem since the power drag down problem occurs even without pressing in the paddle. I think it the problem is the main circuit board but want an experts opinion to cofirm my deduction. I am not sure if their would be something else.

    Thanks for the advice.
The fan and compressor seem to be running fine and keeping the refrigerator and freezer at the correct temperature.

How do I check the thermostat and thermostat valve? Would these be the problem if the refrig and freezer are staying cool?

Ohms, Thank you for the reponse. I tried uploading pictures but this site only allows 150 kb .jpg files and I could not compress any of my pictures that small. I will keep trying. I had the whole front panel apart and the paddle removed and the paddle switch out. Is their another way to send you the pictures?

NOTE: The water will dispense and the light will stay bright and not dim if the fan and compressor are at rest and not working. At that point it seems to have enough power to open the water valve. BUT...the ice dispensers still don't even make a noise....nothing regardless of the compressor and fan status.

This behaviour just started all of a sudden one night. It was weird.

Thanks Pablocsa but jammed ice does not seem to be the problem. The ice shoot is clear and open. I can also turn the auger by hand. The dispenser flap opens and closes ok by hand. Not sure if that solenoid has a problem which should open that round ice flap door when the paddle is pressed.

Hi there,

i can certainly simpathize with your problem.

here are some things to check before you call a repair man per the last suggestion.

the sporatic ice and water production is due to the icemaker itself malfuctioning. all icemakers have a built-in water valve. its better to replace the valve, rather that the icemaker. the water valve solenoids activate the water and ice paddles (or actuators). check the water valve and the solenoids for any leaks, rusting or otherwise. if all else fails, replace the icemaker.

seems that you don't have a water leak anywhere in the water line or otherwise, so that is a good sign. the best way to know, is to see if you have any frost build up on the inside of the door or any leaks on the bottom of the freezer.

the reason the compressor keeps kicking in and out may be many. if at a any point the compressor relay is tripped, the compressor will shut off. it's to protect it from overheating or even worse starting a fire. i would have a service man check out the compressor because it's part of the sealed system. i would recommend that you do not try to repair it yourself.

Hello dannos24672
Welcome.

You said, Whenever you push in the dispenser, the dispenser light will come on but then dim and if the compressor is running, it will shut down the compressor until the light timer shuts off....then the compressor revs up again. And if you switch the panel to turn on the light only, the same dimming and compressor shut down occurs. The ice maker makes ice fine and sometimes the water will dispense fine but then seconds later will not.

Yes, In my opinion the problem could be as simple as the simple inexpensive switch up where the dispenser paddle triggers! Yes I think you are correct. Good call!

You asked,How do y check the thermostat and thermostat valve? Would these be the problem if the refrigerator and freezer are staying cool?
I believe that you could be correct in thinking that the thermostat is not related to this,
since the fridge is staying cool.

Very interesting!
Let me know how it goes.

I would suggest that the best way to fix this would be by contacting GE service at  http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/service/schedule_service.htm

The ice remains stuck between the dispenser and the top of feeding ice. This respond to a broke rubber on the last section where the ice must be delivered. Replace the rubber will fixed the problem. It is a common problem on this kind of devices. To remove the ice simply move the stuck ice from the bottom oro yu can try putting some warm water from the top. Before to do nothing, unplugg your refrigerator first.

Something is grounded and based on your observation it only triggers when you use the dispenser or the light switch on the panel.

since you were able to replace the display circuit, can you open the panel to get a view where the light switch is and the wires for the dispenser paddle? take pictures and post it back here so that we can all see. kinda hard without looking at it.

It could also be the problem of internal wirings of the circuit board which supports the compressor.
also to start check the fan is it running in the fridge as the compressor starts.if nor running check the fan motor.and also check for the thermostat and thermostat valve.

Compressor won't run or it is "clicking' on and off: This normally could be a bad start relay and over load for the compressor, dirty condenser coils need cleaning, condenser fan motor is not running or the compressor itself. To check the compressor properly you should test it with an amp meter, each compressor is rated in running amps ( see model/serial tag or the sticker on the compressor )...if the compressor is drawing too much current, this may be why it is shutting off. Check the model tag for proper amp rating. Some relays will be easy to notice the broken with them, they may be burnt. Example one, example two, example three. Some of these relays can be removed and give them a little shake, and if they rattle around inside the relay is likely bad. Compressors can also seize and click on and off or one of the electrical windings inside the compressor could have opened up. You can use a test cord to help check the compressor and this also will help with the amp test. If the compressor checks ok and you want to install a replacement start relay. You will need to find out which winding is which. You will need an ohm meter to determine the windings. First check to see if you have windings in the compressor. Then check to see if they are grounded. If the compressor has windings and they are not grounded, you can find which winding is which. Check for grounded windings by reading from each terminal to a good ground on the cabinet. Read from the top terminal to the lower left terminal. Read from the top terminal to the lower right terminal. Read from the lower left terminal to the lower right terminal. Write down the resistance of each reading as you go. The highest reading you get will be the run and start winding of the compressor in series with each other. The other terminal left will be the common terminal. Read from the common terminal to each of the other terminals. The terminal with the lower resistance will be the run winding. The higher resistance the start winding. Using the original style relay is always preferred, but using a general replacement can "get you by" if needed.

Could be the big motor that turns the ice in the bin when dispensing the ice. pull out the ice bin, check the big metal thing that turns when you press ice at the front dispenser. or you have a big chunk of ice that the motor can not turn.

tnx 4 using fixya,

    ok,

when you replace the interface board, does it includes the micro switches that are pressed when you switch to ice or crushed?.
could be the micro switch underneath the paddle where you put the glass when you want to get ice or water.

    please check them.

    tnx again, drcool

Assuming you followed the water line installation directions and you have water available to your new refrigerator/freezer here is the rest of the "priming" info you requested. (basically it tells you how to run a bunch of water through the system by filling cups or glasses to remove any debris and/or air...

Automatic Ice & Water Dispenser
Priming the Water Supply System
1. Begin filling the tank by pressing and holding a drinking glass against the water dispenser paddle. 2. Keep the glass in this position until water comes out of the dispenser. It may take about 1½ minutes. 3. Continue dispensing water for about three minutes to flush the system and plumbing connections of any impurities (stopping to empty the glass as necessary).
Ice Maker Operation & Care After the refrigerator is installed properly and has cooled for several hours, the ice maker can produce ice within 24 hours. The ice maker will fill the ice bin from the rear. You must dispense some ice to force the ice forward in the bin. This will allow the bin to fill completely.
Turning the Fresh Food Ice Maker On and Off Ice production is controlled by the ice maker's On/Off icon on the control panel. Press and hold the "Ice Off" icon for three seconds to turn the ice maker "ON" or "OFF". The ice maker is turned off when the LED above the "Ice Off" icon is illuminated.
Using the Ice Maker after Installation Before making ice for the first time, be sure to prime the water supply system. Air in new plumbing lines can result in two or three empty ice maker cycles. Furthermore, if the system is not flushed, the first ice cubes may be discolored or have an odd flavor.
CAUTION
For proper dispenser operation, recommended water supply pressure should fall between 30 psi and 100 psi. Excessive pressure may cause water filter to malfunction.
NOTE The water dispenser has a built-in device that shuts off the water flow after three minutes of continuous use. To reset this shutoff device, simply release the dispenser paddle.
IMPORTANT On occasion, unusually small ice cubes may be noticed in the bucket or in dispensed ice. This could occur in normal operation of the ice maker. If you start seeing these more frequently, it may be an indication of low water pressure or the water filter needs to be replaced. As the water filter nears the end of its useful life and becomes clogged with particles, less water is delivered to the ice maker during each cycle. Remember, if it's been six months or longer since you last changed your water filter, replace the water filter with a new one. Poor quality household water may require the filter to be changed more frequently.
IMPORTANT Your ice maker is turned on at the factory so it can work as soon as you install your refrigerator. If you cannot connect a water supply, set the ice maker's On/Off icon to Off and turn off the water supply valve; otherwise, the ice maker's fill valve may make a loud chattering noise when it attempts to operate without water.
Hope this helps. Randy

Samsung rf4287hars dispenser not dispensing ice

SAMSUNG RF4282/HARS has a total backwards-double negative on the menu screen ( at least to me ) tho granted, the ice maker is perhaps, lets say, one of the slower cube makers I have ever seen... it has a setting that is .... "Ice Making OFF".... with the option ON/OFF.... make sure that setting is set to OFF if u want ice, or non Orange on the ON screen, or no ice will be made... It could have been worded much better... ie: "Turn Ice Making Off" with option yes or no... but no... My mind says...Make Ice, have options yes or no = just that....if I select YES ... ice making should be on.... not with Samsung... Kinda should go with the other setup settings that Samsung has..... simple yes/no
Words are.... ( selection )
"Ice Making OFF" setting should be set to OFF... just to do that... you are turning the shut down mode OFF and u will be making ice ( you are turning the shut down ice making function OFF in common terms)
As expensive as this machine is.... It should be easier and programing should restore after a power flux.... anyone wanting a lot of ice... forget this machine... we continue to purchase bagged ice and keep it in the freezer in the garage, it can\'t keep up on a daily basis.... I continually have to re-enter my WIFI passcode at every power outage... ( sometimes a lot in summer with storms )
My wife wanted it.... steel look.... she now finds she hates keeping it clean... NEVER AGAIN.... Samsung has some great products, but we have to suck up on this one... never again

My Samsung Model: RF4287HARS refrigerator stopped DISPENSING ice. It makes it, but only water comes out of both push levers now. I get ZERO help from samsung customer service. There is nothing in

The problem is actually in the dispenser lever. The paddle that you press to dispense ice has a plastic lever/arm that extends behind it (you can't see it, it's up high in the assembly.) This plastic lever presses upwards when you push the paddle and presses into a switch. The switch actuates the ice. This little lever is also the ONLY thing that stops the paddle from continuing to press into the water paddle. So when the lever breaks, it creates your two symptoms - no ice and if you press further, you press the water switch and get water.

You need part# DA97-08519A. This is the lever assembly with the switches. You pry the control panel assembly (the whole digital display above the water/ice dispenser) out by inserting a slim pry bar (I used a pocket knife and didn't damage the finish) on one side and working my way around. The assembly is held in place by five plastic tabs (two on each side and one on the top.) When this is removed, the part# above will be obvious.

Water leak

IF THE ICE MAKER AND DISPENSER ARE BOTH OFF, THE WATER VALVE IS THE PROBLEM. THERE SHOULD ONLY BE WATER RUNNING WHEN THE ICE MAKER CALLS FOR IT, AND THAT SHOULD ONLY BE ABOUT 7 SECONDS WORTH,
(4 OUNCES).
THE ONLY THING THAT PUZZLES ME ABOUT YOUR DESCRIPTION IS THAT YOU SAY ICE FREEZES OVER THE COMPRESSOR. THE COMPRESSOR IS THE HOT ROUND OBJECT LOCATED UNDER THE REFRIGERATOR OUTSIDE THE COOLING COMPARTMNTS. FREEZING ONLY TAKES PLACE IN THE FREEZER COMPARTMENT. ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE EVAPORATOR COILS? IF THERE IS WATER THERE, THE ICE MAKER COULD BE STUCK IN THE FILL MODE AND THE BACK OF THE ICE MAKER FROZEN SO THE WATER CAN'T REACH THE MOLD OF THE ICE MAKER.
CHECK THE FRONT OF THE ICE MAKER BEHIND THE COVER FOR A BROKEN GEAR. IF IT HAS WRITING ON IT THAT SAYS DO NOT ROTATE MANUALLY, YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE MODULE ON THE FRONT OF THE ICE MAKER.

If you access the ice container and remove any partially melted ice - maybe the ice maker will work. We had a similar problem. We opened the ice reservoir and discovered ice cubes that had partially melted together. Once we removed those, the ice maker and water dispenser returned to normal. Now we check every so often.

It is possible. When you put hit your glass against the paddle to you hear the switch click? And can you still select between water, cubed, and crushed ice? Also does the light by your glass come on when you but your glass against the paddle?

When you put your glass on the paddle it pushes in a microswitch. That microswitch will power the light if it is working and also sends power to the board you are talking about to dispense ice or water depending on what you have selected.
