Question about Maytag 1.6 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave - White

Open Question

Maytag (mmv5165bab) stopped working no power

We were heating dinner one night (25 min run.) The microwave finished and took the food out to stir. A couple minutes after pulling the food out the microwave lost power and stopped working. Checked all breakers, they still have power, the outlet still has power, but the microwave will not work. Any help would be appreciated.

It could easily be a bad line fuse and/or line filter. To access you will need to unplug the unit and remove the outside case. Inside the unit, where the A/C power cord comes in, there should be a small circuit card (part #237068) located somewhere with a fuse mounted on it. This is your input line filter board with line fuse. Replace the fuse, first and see if this fixes your problem. This is a 20amp appliance fuse that you can purchase at any hardware store. Make sure you place the cover back on the unit BEFORE you plug it in. It is not safe to have this area of the microwave exposed with power applied. High potentials in the 4,000 volt range are present! If the fuse does not correct your problem, the circuit card runs about $26.00. Good luck and hope this fixes your problem.

It's cutting out as a whole, which signifies the power is cutting out to it - probably a safety feature. Check your warranty on the unit and have it replaced, either way - I wouldn't feel safe using it. A microwave I once used did the same, and it eventually blew up with a cataclysmic bang.

Typically, no heating of food, indicates a bad Magnetron (tube) or associated components. The oven can be repaired. Magnetrons are not hard to replace and can be ordered online through MCM electronics www.mcmelectronics .

However, due to the dangers of high-voltage within the unit, I would recommend taking the unit to a repair center.

Look in the manual to see what the warranty says. See if there is any information regarding the magnetron or parts. You may be able to get it repaired for free parts, less labor.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

Good Luck,

- Jim

SOURCE: slow Heating

Water is always called for in standard microwave heating tests.

By design, water molecules are what are targeted by the microwave cooking process.

If your line voltage is correct and it is slow to heat, then almost certainly your magnetron is failing.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty but out of the original full warranty, then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

NOTE: There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

I would suspect you have a failed high voltage transformer or maybe magnetron.

you may find the old unit was lower watts so took longer & cooked/heated better all the way through. a way to fix this is lower temp settings or pause and stir the food to help heat it up more even.

The vent/fan goes on every time we heat food up. how do we stop the fan from going while heating up food?

You cannot do that, it will overheat the unit, that fan does two things, it keeps everything cooler, and "Stirs" up the Microwave "Field". So it is essential for safe and efficient use.

Kenmore microwave Model 72 8975590 (750 W) is taking longer to heat food. Takes 3.5 min to bring one cup water to boil, previously took 2,5 to 3 min. Does the element lose power over time?

I can adjust the power level so that circuitry seems to be ok. The longer water boil time could be partially due to the colder winter temperature of the inlet water. We'll just cook the food a bit longer as long as the magnetron is still working.

The microwave runs but doesn't cook the food. It made sort of vibrating noise and stopped heating. Everything else seems to be working.

HI. this is called Magnetron failure. you will need to replace this failed device. it is responsible for the heating of the contents.

My GE spacemaker microwave doesn't heat up foods. There is a slight bit of heat generated but not much. All timers, lights, etc. work normal. It is a GE model jvm1440. It is about 3 years old. The problem...

IT COULD BE A NUMBER OF THINGS RANGING FROM DIODES TO CAPACITORS TO YOUR MAGNATRON OR THERMOSTAST OR TRANSFORMERS. IT'S DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE WITHOUT SEEING THIS MICROWAVE. YOU MAY BE BETTER OFF GETTING YOURSELF A DIFFERENT ONE.

Kenmore Microwave Won't Heat Food

The service manual is here.

Unless there's a bad connection at a magnetron terminal, I would say you have a failing magnetron.

It is part number 2B71165R and you can get it from the Pros here for $68.59 (subject to change).

I always recommend that folks put food off-center on the turntable to assure more even heating.

It's a stirring action, so imagine how inefficient it would be to stir just by twirling a spoon in the center of your coffee!

Also, when you put your food off-center, you're not putting it in the same spot every time. That will help prevent repeated heating of the the same spot on the glass, which can lead to weakness and cracking. This is most common with microwave popcorn.

Sanyo microwave EMS667W, diff high power ratings

A couple of things: If the dinner is in an aluminum pan, DON'T put it in your oven. Typically, high power units need about 3-5 minutes to heat a dinner so you should have heated it through. The power default is usually full power. Usually, there is a minutes button that should give you incremental minutes for programming.

Try using a standard nonmetallic cup (beaker) and fill it with water. Heat for 2 minutes. The water should be boiling hot. If not, your oven is not doing it right.

Microwave runs but does not heat--is is repairable???

I replied to your other post as well: It could be any multitude of issues from a faulty magnetron,a bad high voltage diode, a door switch issue or a faulty circuit board. A magnetron for your model is ~ the $60 area. A Circuit board is ~ the $100.00 mark. If your a wiz at electronics I would say give it a go and try to repair it yourself. Otherwise I would say that a new microwave oven would be your best bet. A technician may charge you up to $250 for the work they will do, bringing you to around the same cost of a new microwave with a warranty. Hope this helps. P.S. If you are interested in buying the parts and fixing it yourself, may I recommend this site: http://www.repairclinic.com They are top notch and really helpful.
