Whirlpool Dishwasher won't run

When I push whatever cycle I want to run (i.e. antibacterial), the LCD just shows two dashes and will not start. We have tried shutting off the power but that did not work. Any ideas?

Hi,

I am tempted to think that the two dashes is not an error code but rather indicates that the controller itself has failed. The controller is like a mini computer with built-in program/sequence. The two dashes indicates that it will not reset itself or start its function. Pls try:

  • see if your unit will go into diagnostic mode;
  • entry into diagnostic varies from model to model, version to version;
  • normally, a techsheet pasted somewhere in the washer would have the sequence or the interpretation of the display;
  • in most cases, it maybe found at the back side of the bottom kickplate.
Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back the exact model number, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    The door latch pulls the door tightly closed to prevent water leakage around the door. It is also designed to prevent operation while the door is open. The door latch works in concert with the door switch to ensure that the door is tightly closed and latched.

    The door switch is a separate part from the door latch and is found inside the cabinet. The switch is off when the door is open. Depressing the switch closes the circuit and enables dishwasher operation. Closing the door does not depress the switch all the way. Only when the door is closed and latched, does the door fully depress the switch.

    The timer motor regulates the length of time power is routed to each component. If the timer motor does not function properly, it can result in a failure of the dishwasher to start at all.To service the timer motor, it is necessary to access the control panel in the door. Access varies by model; on some models you can remove just the control panel on others you must remove the interior or exterior panel of the door.

Hi,

If your dishwasher doesn't work at all, check these:

Power from the house Is there power getting to the dishwasher? This can be difficult to test, because dishwashers are usually wired directly to an electrical circuit, rather than plugged into the wall. But at least check for a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker.

Door switch The door switch is important because, if it's defective, the dishwasher won't work at all. To reach it, you need to remove the control panel cover, or sometimes the interior liner of the door. If it's defective, you need to completely replace it.

Wiring Often the main wiring connection from the house, at the dishwasher, burns and breaks the connection. If that's the problem, the wires must be repaired/replaced as necessary. If that's not the problem, check the wiring to the door switch, the wiring between the door and the lower part of the dishwasher, and the wiring to the timer. Repair any broken, burned, brittle, or defective wiring, using the proper appliance-grade wire and connectors.

Timer or selector switch Although it's uncommon, the timer or the selector switch may be defective. If so, you need to replace the defective part, because neither of these can be repaired.

DISHWASHER was locked now unlocked but won't run. Goes to drain/Cancel when you push the Normal Cycles

Wondering how you unlocked the dishwasher. Normally you would have pressed Heat Dry for about 4 secs.

I don't this action would have caused the problem. For dishwasher to run you need the door lock switch to operate. If door is not closed it will go to Cancel.

Check item 12 in this diagram.
