Toshiba 15 GB Hard Drive

I need a hard disk for my Toshiba Portege 7200.

By herself - usenet poster

I need a hard disk for my Toshiba Portege 7200.
I spoke to some of the authorised Toshiba resellers and they told me that I
could use any 2.5 hard drive.

So I got a Toshiba hard disk, model: mk1516gap.

BUT, my laptop doesn't even see the hard disk. : (

Can anyone help?
What hard disk are compatible with my laptop?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I've already posted that as a solution !

Go to Toshiba's site, and download the latest BIOS update for your machine.
Flash the BIOS with it, and it *may* solve your problem, if the drive is
bigger than your BIOS supports, or similar.

He CANNOT get it to FDisk.

Quote "I fdisk it...and fdisk says: "no fixed drive"?"

That means the drive is not being found by the PC.

He hasn't !

Correct, so it's either not connected properly, or he needs a BIOS update.

Suggest a bios update :-) Oh! I seem to remember someone suggesting that
:-( Try Toshiba updates and download a Bios update for your machine:-0

BTW

I assume you have another machine:-0 So why not, throw the bloody laptop

Err, he can get to fdisk so it must be connected! How has he been able to
put Dos files on it to run fdisk even though it says no drive? So that
leaves broken. New drives are rarely "broken" IMHO

A mystery, but probably easy to sort out if all info has been provided.
Going away now:-) Had enough.

Er, he can't FDISK it. The computer isn't seeing the drive, so he can't do
ANYTHING to it !

It's either broken, or not connected.

No probably not formatted after fdisking it needs to be ACTIVE to be
recognised and this could be the reason it is not being seen. Then needs
formatting to receive OS. That said it must be connected properly or how
could he fdisk it? As for a broken new HDD been known but same reason as
above applies.

It's not connected properly then, or it is broken.

Update your BIOS to the latest version - if it's a large drive, you may need
to do this in order for it to recognize the drive.

Any 2.5 Hard Drive will work fine.

Is it definately connected properly ? The cable the correct way round ?

Go into the BIOS, and set the HD to AUTO.

Boot to DOS from a floppy ( "format a: /s" in Win95/98 to make one ) and
type FDISK

Create a Primary DOS Partition, and enable FAT32.

Reboot, and FORMAT C:

Install Windoze.

You need to create a dos partition on a new disk, using fdisk from the
Windows rescue floppy, (you did make one didn't you?) After creating the
partition, you format the disk, then start the loading procedure.
