Red light comes on but the shuts off?

Hi, i know there are afew problems with the power lights going from red to green then yellow then flashing red, unfortunatly mine doesn't do this. If you plug it in the red standby light comes on, but as soon as you press the power on it clicks and all lights go off as if the power unit has tripped out? After this it will take 5 mins of leaving it off before the standby light will come back on. I have tryed a good power unit and the same happens, no visable signs of faults on the boards, heat sink seems ok. Do they have a temprature sensor somewhere that could be faulty?

Yeh i was hopeing that would work but unfortunatly as soon as the on button is touched the power trips out so it wont even let you hold it on until the second beep, it's looking like the prossesor on the motherboard has burnt out or the temprature sensor in it has failed, thanks for the reply.

Mine did that and it really pised me of, sony told me to turn the power switch onthe back of the console on, when the stand by light comes on to push and hold the on button for at least 3 seconds until you hear a second set of beeps. This however didn`t work so I sent it back to Sony Australia and got it fixed up no worries.

When you plug in your system with the power cable and turn the toggle switch (in the back) do you see the red stand by light?

The red and yellow light comes from 1 bulb and the green and blu light comes from another..

If you have the YLOD and your yellow/red light is out, you will only see the green light.

I am really interested in your problem.

Do this to check your status: If you can do this function below but not any other, chances are, you do have the YLOD. It can be fixed.

Power off the unit using the toggle switch on the back. Hold down the 'eject' button and turn the toggle switch back from off to on. This will run a fan test and should eject your disc. Remember, this will only work on the 20, 40g models. Not the backwards compatible units with the 4 usb port holes and the memory card slots.

The unit will power on briefly, the light will change from red to green, as the drive starts to spin. within a couple of seconds it shuts off and the light flashes yellow with 3 quick beeps, then flashes...

Hi there,
The yellow light you're referring to is the 360's evil cousin, the "Red Ring of Death". The best information I can provide you comes with some handy video tutorials but will require that you open up your PS3. This will also void the warranty so if you aren't sure what you are doing, call SCEA instead. Their number is 1-800-345-7669.

After pressing the on button it turns green for 5 seconds then it flashes yellow/orange for a second then it flashes red.

Yellow Light of DeathThe "Yellow Light of Death" or YLOD is the common phrase people use to describe the following sequence when they try to turn on their PS3:

  • Press Power Button
  • Red Light Flashes Three Times
  • Yellow Light Flashes
  • Green Light Flashes
  • Beeps Three Times
  • Red Light Flashes

The sequence above may vary a bit but you do see the flashing yellow light (sometimes shows up as orange) that normally you would not see when operating your PS3. The YLOD is a general hardware fault that can mean a lot of things. However, one of the problems is cracked solder that leads the PS3 to think one of its internal chips is not connected or is broken somehow. Cracked solder can happen when the chips get too hot (RSX most likely) and leads the motherboard to start bending, which may crack the solder. Changing the power supply (lower the average wattage going to the chips to lower the heat) and better thermal compound (heat dissipates faster to the heatsink) may prevent this error from occurring. However, if your PS3 has already had the YLOD, then you can reflow your motherboard every few months to keep it working (but it is not a permanent fix as the YLOD usually comes back).

Power comes on try's to eject disc power light turs yellow then goes back to red light. whats wrong any info

Hi, alot of people think they know the answer to things they know nothing about.....2 units getting the ylod does not mean someone should trust you more...lol
I own a console repair shop and have fixed over 150 PS3 units. your unit displaying the flashing red light is telling your there has been a malfunction.
some people turn their systems back on to realize they have the ylod and the unit quickly turns on then off displaying the green and red lights at the same time,
giving us our yellow light. I have come across a few consoles with the exact problem you refer too. Your system is shutting down due to a blu-ray drive failure(most likely a problem with the pcb on the bluray drive.) I was able to fix the issue by replacing the pcb, the trick is finding a compatible pcb. you have to match up the revisions.
Parts may be hard to come across, these pcb boards are very rarely listed online. So my suggestion to you, is to find a console repair shop around your area, and see if they may have the part you need, otherwise sell your unit for parts. With blu-ray lasers being expensive, you can still easily get 80-100 for the unit.

good luck,

You should open up the PS3 and use compressed air to dust it off. Take a look at the thermal paste to make sure it isn't dried up! PS3 Flashing Red Light The Ultimate Solution

Xbox 360 adapter

The flashing yellow light on the Power adaptor points to a potential failure with the power adaptor. Usually when the adaptor is idle their is a solid yellow light, A red light for a total failure and a green light for on.

A YEllow flashing light would indicate that there could be potential problems with the adaptor overheating and/or being faulty. where is the adaptor located ? just like the console itself. they are prone to overheating and collect dust very easily.

i would suggest moving the adaptor into an area with a large opening to allow the flow of air to keep it cool, also i would attempt to remove any dust inside.

Try doing this and if the problem persists, let me know
