Hi there...I have a bit of a problem
I have aquired a Toshiba t4850ct laptop, this unfortunately hasn't come with
any floppies..ie boot up.
The prob. is when I boot up it requires me to input a password, this I
obviously don't know.
I have tried to get into the bios by pressing esc and f1..but the password
request overrides this...I wonder if anybody could help...thanks

Txxxx series machine. It's either something like a 1950CT which just needs
the CMOS battery removed, or one of the newer machines, e.g Satellite 110CT.
To re-emphasise, this machine does need either a new EEPROM, or a copy of
the engineers disk to remove the password.

wrong - Rob _is correct_ on this.
The T4850 is one of the few machines which the dongle and keydisk do
not work. To remove the password you need to either send the machine
back to Toshiba (not one of their dealers) who have an engineers disk
to unlock the machine (The engineers disk is not the same as the
keydisk and only Toshiba have a copy). I had to send three T4900CT
machines to Toshiba a few years back. It cost ??50 per machine,
although now that the machines are so cheap it's debatable whether or
not its worth it.
On none of the 'modern' (ie. fast 486 and above) will removing the
CMOS battery work and on most of the branded machines this holds true
for supervisor/admin passwords at least.
Hope this helps,

forgot to refresh my memory but now I have and it seems you were
talking more rubbish than me the T4850 range was designed to be extra
secure and the password cannot be disabled using the Toshiba loopback
(Parallel) and the remove the CMOS battery is crap anyway - read the snippet
from the Toshiba Support website below:
GENERAL - Password Deletion
The password protection on the
T4500 / T4500C
T4600 / T4600C
T4700CT
T4800CT / T4850CT
T4900CT
T6600C
is designed to be as secure as possible. Therefore, once a power-on password
has been set in the PWSETUP utility, it cannot be changed by any
unauthorised person.
This means that if users forget their password or an unauthorised person
tries to bypass an existing password there are no bypass routines available
to them.
If users forget or misplace their power-on password, they must send the
machine back to Toshiba via their authorised reseller. The reseller must
call the Technical Support HelpLine to book the machine in as a CHARGEABLE
REPAIR with a Purchase Order number (the 'repair' will be charged at normal
hourly rates for labour with no parts replaced). Toshiba will then disable
the password and return the machine to the reseller.
Note: Users should be strongly advised to create a 'master password' which
can be used in emergencies if normal user passwords are forgotten.
Access to this password should be limited to the least possible number of
people and it should only be used as a last resort.
rubbish was it ?
