The code is gotten by hooking the unit up to your pc -via USB cable -then going to the website. You may have to download the 'download manager' and or just download a file so the unit can talk to the website - but - it is FREE and they will download the code automatically once hooked into their system.
You can activate products by connecting the unit to a USB port of a computer. If The Tomtom Home application is installed on computer it will launch and update the unit. On page 1 of main Home menus there is an icon for activation.
To make things easy for you I am enclosing a screen capture from the HOME 2.7 application.
If the software crashed whilst updating, you will find that if you try to restore from a complete backup when you switch on next time it will either say you cant use the map or will just freeze, fix re format both the internal memory and the memory card, then find where tom tom home had stored the files, then using windows copy the contents from the 2 folders back into the relitive internal and external card, you will then find that you will get the mesage that you cant use the map, this is because tom tom home doesent always put the map data into the correct folder, to fix this find the licence data and the map data that has been stored on the sd card instead of the internal memory and copy it into the internal memory, before switching off press the reset button, when you switch on you should find that you have a working tom tom
This is impossible to do without your product code. The code is supplied with a new TomTom and is usually on a separate card or if you have installation CD's it may be printed in the CD box behind one of the CD's. If you've bought map downloads before then it will be on the My Downloads page.
The code is made up of three groups of five characters/numbers.
Without the code, your TomTom is inoperable and it's a deliberate feature to prevent stolen TomToms from being of use to anyone but the owner.
I have managed to load a downloaded map onto two separate Tomtom one XL devices. I did it through tom tom home. I purchased , downloaded and installed the map on my first device. Then connected my second device to my computer. In TOM TOM Home I then changed my device using the Device menu / Change device. it then allowed me to load the map onto a second TOM TOM device.
