Hello,
my name is Johnathan and i will be helping you to day, your question was wiring up an old radio and you need to know what the connections on the back do.so we have mostly 2 different connections 1is the antenna and the other is your wire's for power and sound now on the back of the radio will be a collared wir's

red- for you ACC which will get attached to a switched power 12 volt source

yellow- will get connected to 12 volt's constant like you battery caution
(risck of shock)

black- will get hooked up to the body of the car either to the Chase or their will be a solid black wire.

After you have all the power hooked up you should have 6 wire's left 3 solid and 3 with a black strip the solid's will be positive(+) and the wire's withe the black strip will be negitiv(-) and after you have all your wire's hooked up you should be able to enjoy so good music so enjoy. and i hope i was helpful.

My Clarion AM/FM,CDMP3,marine radio will play when...

I had the same issue with a blown speaker that was shorting it
self out. I found this on "TeamClarion.com" site.

Step 1: Disconnect all the speakers from the head unit and try again. If the same message comes up, send the unit in for service.
Step 2: If the message goes away, you have a wiring problem. Check each speaker lead for a short circuit, damaged speaker or a ground to chassis.

Basically means one set (or more) of the speaker leads are touching each other (shorting out). This can be somewhere inline to your speakers or your speakers them selves. The advise above isn't to clear. In the first step they want to rule out the speakers attached but "disonnecting all the speakers" is vague. You should disconnect at the rear of the radio. This might be difficult because the multi plug in the back has the speakers and power wires together (at least most clarions). Also if it was a good install then the outgoing speaker wires were soldered to the long run speaker wires going to the speakers.
To truly test for radio fault verses the wiring or speakers, you have to sever the connection at the back of the radio. If this is not something you wish to do then there is one suggestion. Order a new multi plug for the back of the radio. This way you can pull the old plug and test it with a new plug with no speakers attached (just have to run 12v positive and negative).
If the radio is OK then start by checking all the wires to your speakers (if possible). If nothing seems bare and shorting (remember it's usually in tight places or were the wires are hanging loose that vibration will cause cutting to the wire) then disconnect all your speakers (at the rear of the speakers). Turn the radio back on and see if it does the error message again. If not reattach the speakers one by one checking for the error message.
You can check these in any order. If you don’t want to order a new plug then you and can’t get to much of the wiring to physically check then starting at the speakers is OK.

Clarion DXZ785USB - Connecting Fused Lines

You will definitely need to connect the Yellow Wire Memory Back-Up Lead, since this is the connection from the radio to the battery that stores the time and your presets. If it is not hooked up, you can use the radio, but all your settings will return to default once you turn off the car. The Yellow Wire Bus Power Lead sounds like it would be for powering an auxiliary unit like a Sat Radio or HD Radio add-on. You will not need to connect this unless you have an add-on such as one of these.

Installed a clarion radio it powers up but no music thru speakers

sounds like a short in your wiring to your speakers the best thing to do to check this is run a speaker wire directly to the speaker from the stereo check it that way and see if it works. If that don't work it's the wires on the stereo connection. The speaker wires on most aftermarket stereos are mostly colored 2 of each green, purple, white & grey.

Antenna Power supply

First order of business is to check and see if the antenna is operating properly. If the wire in your harness is intended to power the antenna, connect 12 volts to this lead, and the antenna should go up (this needs to be done with the key in the ON or ACCY position). If the antenna does not go up, check the fusebox for a blown fuse. If the antenna does indeed go up, then you can scratch that off the list of possible problems and move on to the next step.

The Clarion should have a power input wire to keep the clock alive, and a power wire (normally of heavier guage) to actually power the radio. Make sure the radio operates when the key is in the ON or ACCY position. If the radio is operating, so far so good.

I'm kind of confused when you say there are two wires on the clarion... "power antenna turn-on" and "auto antenna". Are these both on the clarion? There should be a wire that constantly feeds the antenna with power (I would cal this one auto antenna). It should always be powered to 12 volts. The antenna should operate when the "antenna turn on" lead becomes 12 volts. Normally this ONLY happens when the clarion RADIO is on (ie: if you're listening to a CD, the antenna probably won't get activated).

After checking all this, if you're still having problems and if you haven't already done so, grab a DC volt meter and verify that the clarion power antenna turn on lead goes to 12 volts when you turn on the radio. If it does not, then there is an internal problem within the radio. If this lead IS going to 12 volts when it is supposed to and the antenna still isn't working, then my guess is that the antenna is malfunctioning.

Let me know what you find out... I'll keep looking at stuff from this end. Good luck.
