Question about MP3 & Digital Media Players

X20 firmware update failed - now won't operate at all!

I was in the process of ripping a CD using the iRiver software installed on laptop. Message stated new files needed to be downloaded - clicked 'ok' then message stated re-start computer. Laptop would not restart, I had to physically remove the battery. Now the comp can't see the X20 and I can't switch the X20 on. At first the flashing 'initialising' screen appeared - but this just kept on flashing repeatedly and then the screen reverted to the black 'off-screen'. Subsequently realised the CD had a 'copy-protect label' on and wonder if this has messed things up?

Tried restarting the firmware as instructed (thanks) - but it seems computer can't see the device. Normally it would turn it on automatically - it doesn't and trying the on/off switch doesn't work either.

    iRiver X20 8gb MP3 Player.

    I have as previously suggested:-

    1. System restore
    2. Restart firmware update - cannot get any further than the first page on this since despite connecting the X20 - it can't be seen. Going to 'My Computer' confirms there is no additional drive showing.

I have also tried, connecting it to the main PC (rather than laptop) but it can't see it either, have even used a different USB lead/port etc. Despite the fact that the computer can't see the X20 - if I connect it to a live USB cable the device itself still shows the flashing 'initialising' screen for a minute or so - then goes completely dead. On/off controls don't work. Taking out the battery and re-inserting it, plus connecting via the USB again - produces once again the 'initialising' sequence and again switches off.

I only bought it in April so if necessary I can just return it to the vendor, I just hoped I might be able to sort it and avoid this.

Thanks to all for the suggestions, is there anything else I can do?

Regarding the iRiver X20 - is there anything further I can try at home, or is it a case of returning the unit to the company I got it from?

    Thanx,

Luckily it is still under guarantee - but if this ever happens again when it is out of guarantee, is there a way I can re-flash the memory myself?

    Thanks,

    Betti

Looks like the circuitry in your X20 was corrupted when you restarted the laptop. The usual recourse is to update the firmware; but since your player is not even getting recognised, I would suspect a problem with the USB port on the player as well.

Since you stated that its still under warranty, I would honestly recommend taking it back to the store, before trying something that screws up the player and voids your warranty. (Better safe than sorry :)

Best of luck!

Hi,
Nothing much can be done at home , the unit needs to replaced if its under warranty. The cd ripping , has not caused a failure on the same. The flash memory in the unit has caused the failure.

Thanks

Hi,

Much as we techs would like to tinker around the device, I am afraid that you iRiver X20 has been "bricked", a term applied when the basic firmware will not load and therefore the device (less the software) is practically useless. There are of course various approaches / possible solutions dealing with your concern from as simple as removing the battery to hot swapping. However, the least worry and your right is to claim warranty replacement.

Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Try restarting the firmware update process.

The problem can be with the computer, try the x20 on a different computer first.

If the X20 works fine on another computer try the following:

    • Do a system restore to a date before having the problem.

    • Unplug power and remove power battery from laptop again, waiting 15 or 20 minutes.

    • If you are using any management software for the X20 reinstall it.
If the X20 does not work on a different computer:

    • Try restarting update firmware procedure, as suggested.

    • Take X20 to a repair shop, they can re-flash the firmware for a small fee.
    Hope that helps.

Check if the X20 can start standalone, if it starts standalone, test it on a different computer.

If the X20 is damaged, and does not connect to any computer anymore, or does not start, then you will need to take it in for repairs.

Usually, computer repair shops and phone repair shops can fix this kind of small devices.

If the X20is not recognised on more than one computer, and you cannot reinstall firmware, then it is faulty.

Check all buttons and switches, press them, and see if one of them is stuck.

It looks more like the unit must be taken apart and tested. See if you have receipts and seller contact.

I suggest also contacting the factory here.

My iRiver H10 will not power up

Hi Ozzieange.....the most common cause of this symptom for your specific player is that it's set on "hold". Ensure that "hold" isn't selected. If this hasn't resolved your issue, and you are using Microsoft as your OS, let's begin by updating the applicable software for your OS, released on 08-08-07 by clicking on the following URL: http://www.iriver.com/support/down_view.asp?searchProductIdx=61&searchCategoryIdx=3&searchString=&page=1&idx=860&tmpSearchProductIdx=Select+a+Product&tmpSearchCategoryIdx=Select+a+Category&tmpSearchString= Download and install the above software, and finalize the installation process by restarting your computer. Once restarted, let's update the firmware on your Player by clicking on the following URL: http://www.iriver.com/support/down_list.asp?searchProductIdx=61&searchCategoryIdx=1&page=1&idx=&tmpSearchProductIdx=61&tmpSearchCategoryIdx=1&searchString= Click to Download and Install the following Firmware: H10 Firmware Release V2.53 (dated Jul 05, 2006) If applicable, return to the above URL and click to Download and Install the following Firmware: [MTP] Iriver Firmware Updater V2.6.0.0 for MTP devices (dated Jun 22, 2007) Once these tasks are successfully completed, your Player, and the neccessary Software for your computer to properly communicate with your Player are now current and fully functional. Please return to update your post with your progress and/or observations.....good luck my friend

You can try the official iriver site to try to find the software
if after u install the driver software it still doesnt work im pretty sure that the USB interface is broken which means unless u know how to fix it and are willing to open the x20 ur iriver x20 is essentially dead

Accidentally formatted my x20, now OS Vista does not see x20 when plugged in. Is there any way to reinstall the firmware?

firstly reformat the x20 using the device itself...
after that install the iriver plus 3...
there should be something on the program to reinstall it...
i also think that on the disc that comes with the iriver, there is an install that might help...
otherwise try and reformat the comp

Good Luck...

Iriver X20 database full

does the message stop you from using the iriver?
if it doesn't then there's a format function on the iriver in the settings menu...
if it does then there may be a problem with the usb connection...
either the iriver isnt responding or the computer can't read it!
for the user below there is most likely a format will fix it...

Screw Window Media Player. Just use the included software instead. Iriver Plus 3 makes all the necessary conversions for your player, to make sure it works properly. WMP messes stuff up a lot.

Same problem on a 2GB x20 I just bought. Easy to get things into the device, but nothing recognized as playlist either using iriver plus3 or Media Player.

My iriver T10 is not being detected

That happend to me and i found a solution. First go to my computer and on your left click on VIEW SYSTEM INFORMATION then go to HARDWARE now click in DEVICE MANAGER it should say T10 around there look for T10 or IRIVER T10 and click on it press in UPDATE THIS TIME ONLY or an option you like and click next then click on the RECOMENDED OPTION to install the iriver t10 after you do that a magnifying glass should appear and wait and it would install saying MTP.
If still need help send me a message at NOHEMYGIRALDO@SBCGLOBAL.NET
