I had similar problems with my scanner (not HP) and turned out to be the driver, may I suggest checking that you have the latest drivers for your scanner, the following link has the drivers and manuals for your HP.

Which driver set did you install? Did you install the HP basic drivers, the full software or the Windows XP built-in driver? The Windows OS driver usually only is the printer driver.

If you connected the USB cable before installing the HP software, you will get the OS drivers. Disconnect the USB cable and then uninstall the printer driver. (Start > Control Panel > Printers and Devices. Then right click on the printer and select Remove Device.)

Install the HP software. If you want to launch a scan from the all-in-one's front panel button, install the full software.

Next open the scan software on your computer. (This is the HP Solutions Center for most models if you use the full software.) Attempt to launch a scan from the software. Adjust the resolution and other settings as needed. Then use those settings to adjust the destinations for the front panel buttons in the software. (Settings > Scan Settings > Button Settings)

If this doesn't work, try a different USB cable, a different USB port on your computer and a direct connection (if you are using a USB hub). Scanners require bi-directional communication with the computer and may fail when the printer works due to a minor cable issue. If you have the printer connected to a router or similar device to turn it into a network printer, again the scanner will not work. Again the direct connection to the computer is needed.

If you are still having trouble, can you use the all-in-one's copy function? If not, do you have any error messages? If the scanner mechanism isn't moving, the unit probably needs service. (This model doesn't have a scanner lock to protect the mechanism in transit.)

Scanner doesn't work


Would first try updating the driver for your model and operating system. See here for drivers, User Guides and Manual:

You can also search ther support database if an updated driver does not resolve issue.

You might try checking to see if you have the most up-tp-date. If not, uninstall your current driver and download and install the new driver.

How to connect my brother mfc-8460N scanner can't


You will need to use a cable to use the scanner.

Either a USB cable to connect directly to computer or an ethernet cable directly to router, then you will need to install the driver software.

Scanner driver for Epson Perfection 4490 Photo 10.5.6 doesn't wk


Epson has a Mac OS 10.5 support page HERE
There is a new beta driver section you may want to try and there are FAQ's for the perfection scanner with Mac OS..
I know it will work with your Mac... I've got the same one and it's working. All the drivers as there as well.

scanner drivers are separate from printer drivers. make sure to load the scanner drivers either from the installation CD or from www.hp.com directly

My new Dell laptop won't accept my old BenQ flatbed scanner Model no. 6678-9BU.


Many scanners are not compatible with new windows versions, probably the scanner does not work on Vista.
You need to find, download and install the driver for your scanner, if you have the original disk, try using athe disk.

Here is direct link to download . Register with the website first(Create a new account), then download from here:6678 driver (Benq)


If the disk does not install, or you find no drivers, that means the scanner is not compatible with your new system.
