I havew a gateway FPD1975W monitor and I can not get it to fit the screen correctly. It stretches outside of the screen.

You need to set your PC video resolution to the native resolution of this monitor: 1440 × 900 @60Hz.

I have a Toshiba 50h71 with nothing but a blinking power light and click sound when I plug it in. I found a service manual, I have the TV opened up, and I've got a digital multimeter, but I'm not exactly...

resolder the connections on the board around the caps even though it looks good it could still have a bad connection. While your at it heat up the solder connections around other components. If this doesnt solve you problem concentrate on the high voltage section of you tv check for open resistors. And bad transistors move from there to your driver chips these may be in the in the form of high output transistor chips. If it is overheating it might be the source of your problem. Check your horizontal and vertical output chips and make sure they are not overheating as well

My screen has shrunk i/3

If the shrinking is vertical a vertical coupling cap has changed value or in some cases the cap coupling the oscillator portion of the chip to the output portion of the chip has opened. The former will be a large cap the latter will be a small cap around 10 ufd or smaller

Distorted sound

Poor signal or poor connection to the cable probably. Could also be a speaker issue or the audio board on the tv is failing.

Most likely just poor signal or poor connection on the cable.

Won't start

sounds like a board related issue. if this were an lcd issue and the vga chip aint fried, then you should be able to power on a separate monitor by pluggin it into the external vga port usually on the side of the laptop. if you get picture and everything on the external monitor then you know you have a failed lcd or inverter. in the event that it does not get picture on the external and the laptop is still greenlit, you may find that there is a more serious problem with the board. i have seen this happen too often recently with overheating video chips. good luck

Compaq Presario R4000 looses video and freezes after a while

The problem you describe can be caused by two different things. The two are not related to each other in any way.

The first, which is more common on desktop computers than laptop computers, is a thermal problem. The video chipset is overheating and causing a shutdown of the video. It is possible that this overheating is actually the cpu, but I don't think so, based on your description.

The second is the video power inverter chip. The power needed to keep the lcd screen lit up on a laptop is considerably more than what is needed to run the laptop itself. For this reason, a small power inverter chip is installed on laptops. It is usually found under the plastic bezal that surrounds the screen, and usually on the bottom. When this chip goes bad, the symptoms are as you have described.

Here's a couple things you can do before seeing a technician or teaching yourself to take apart your laptop. Plug in a different monitor; an external monitor and restart your computer. You should have a function option that will let you see two monitors at once. (that's the fn key, usually in the lower left of your keyboard). With two monitors showing exactly the same pictures, see if you can recreate your symptom.

If the problem is in the power inverter chip, the external monitor should remain on when the lcd monitor goes black.

If the problem is inside your computer (video or cpu overheating) then both monitors will go off.

good luck
