Replaced the Sharp LCD with a Toshiba LTM15C166 LCD from a Dell Latitude C810, Model No.PP01X. What I get is a lightshow of gradually changing colors. Pretty but not useful. Do I need to load the drivers or what? Help...
Notebooks like toshiba's are hardware and software specific. Other hardwares will work but not guaranteed to provide full and satisfying results. Drivers may fix the problem. But I suggest you get a orginal Toshiba LCD

Buy a replacement and fit it I guess. Why would you need to replace an item that doesn't fail?
As far as I am aware there is an adapter; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HDD-Hard-Disk-Drive-Caddy-IDE-Adapter-Connector-DELL-LATITUDE-C800-C810-C840-/380698290269?pt=Laptop_Adapters_Chargers&hash=item58a362e85d and maybe a flexible cable; but that is for the screen.
Batteries for portable systems have a average expected life of 300 to 500 discharge / recharge cycles. On systems where you didn't use the battery a great deal, the battery may have a useful life of several years.
In you case, the batteries have long exceeded their normal life so you will need to find replacements.
if you can get hold of a second Dell Lappy (same model) which is broken (not broken screen) you can swap the broken screen for the good one.
It means opening the laptop, but due to the smashed screen the warranty is invalid anyway.
There is usually 1 or 2 cables coming from the screen 1 for signal and 1 for power.
you can explore the broken lappy to see how the screen connects,
I would suspect that your CD laser is bad (CD uses a different laser than DVD), and therefore should be replaced. Here is an ebay search to help you out:
