Question about Vantec NexStar-3 External 3.5inch SATA&USB2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure (Black) (NEWITEM58149860) Drive Case

NexStar hard drive doesn't recognize its size

I set up a 80 Gb WD800 hard drive in a NexStar 3 a few months ago and after some setup procedures related to file system types I copied my laptop to it by just drag and drop C; to F:. As luck would have it, my hard drive crashed last week and after installing a new one, F: only shows 3.30 Gb free space on 3.39 Gb total size on this 80 Gb drive! Yet when I search further on the Volumes tab is shows 76317 MB capacity with 72848 MB unallocated with MBR partiton style. In the Volume window F: has only 3475 MB size. I've checked the Show hidden files and folders in Folder options and I've changed the file type from FAT32 that it first recognized to NTFS with no difference. Why can't I fully access this HD? I fear it is corrupted and the data is lost, but I'm hoping it's just hidden.

This is the usual reason:
USB port has 4 pins (connectors). The two at the ends supply 5 Volts to the hard drive (or any other appliance you connect. I don't think there's a problem with those two because you can see the power light on the hard drive.
The middle is for data transfer. If one gets damaged, although the device gets power, the OS cannot recognize the device.
Try changing the USB cable you are using. Connectors in the wire are damaged more easily than those in the device.

Windows 7 NexStar drivers and installation needed

No device-drivers are needed. Just connect this USB device, and Windows will recognize it. If there is a "one-touch-backup" button, it won't work, but you can still use drag-and-drop to copy files from your internal disk-drive to this external disk-drive.

Vantec Nexstar 3 HD not being recognized on comp

Hi, I had this same problem - blue light flashing and the drive not being recognised.

The problem was with the power cord, not the drive.

I solved the problem by unplugging the connection on the power cord between the outlet end and the power brick section, and re-plugging them after flipping one of the ends over.

The drive was now getting power correctly and spun up and was recognised as usual.

Nexstar

Its normal, and is the signal showing the drive powering/spinning up and down. The drive spins at 7200 rpms, when you power it up or down, its switches onto the speed that best suits  what it's intended to do.
