Question about Breville Die Cast 800ESXL Espresso Machine

Chrome on steam wand wearing off

After 6 months of use the chrome plating on the steam wand of our 80ESXL Espresso machine has worn off! We returned the unit to Williams Sonoma and they graciously replaced the whole unit. now after 2.5 months the tip of the new wand is starting to show the brass ? under the chrome. We use the machine about three times daily and have had good luck with it other than this cosmetic issue. My concern is is there any health problem with the chrome wearing off? Also is this a common problem or what? It would seem that it happening to two machines would indicate a problem either with us or the plating. Please advise. I'm sure Williams Sonoma will take it back, but we actually love the machine and it is perfect for our needs. BUT I don't want to get a third one only to have the same problem again. Thanks, Peter Geisser  petergeisser@cox.net

How are you cleaning the wand? You should be using a wet soft cloth or sponge only. If you use anything abrasive like a scrubby pad it will make the chrome plating come off. If milk gets stuck on the wand, fill up a glass or big pot with hot water and let the wand soak in it to soften.

Our local health dept. makes all of our customers replace their steam wands if brass is showing though (we fix commercial machines for a living). I don't know what the health effects are but the health dept. says it is a hazard.

Consider this --it doesn't have to be chrome or brass or anything special
find an engineering shop that can manufacture one out of stainless steel
It meets hygiene standards , will not wear off with incorrect cleaners and always looks good

I cant get my steam wand to froth milk- it heats just fine, just wont froth.

The steam valve can wear plastic on metal, try pushing on the knob while steming , if the steam pressure increases the valve is worn out and not opening all the way.

Our Saeco Royal Professional has been working well but has started ejecting steam out of the steam wand and cappucino spout.

Sounds like your machine needs a new steam valve plastic. Because it is worn the part is allowing steam to come out of the steam wand when it should be closed.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like the steam wand is getting blocked some where either at the metal end or in the parnello wand if you machine has one at the end of the steam wand, if both of those are clean then try this push in on the steam knob if that works then tap rod assemble or steam valve needs to be replaced, make sure to ask about the stainless steel valve instead of the plastic one.

Hello I have a problem with y machine. I have got a message "Ventilate", and i have pushed the button 26, but nothing happens. What to do?

You need to push the hot water button on the machine panel to allow water to run out of the steam wand. After a few seconds the machines ventilate message should clear.

Steam Wand Leaking on La Pavoni Espresso Si

I HAD the same problem. I fixed it for 50 cents. It takes the removal of 4 screws (2 phillips on top, 2 long standard on bottom by the group) to remove the top to access the steam wand valve. Once the the top (and the chrome bezel) is removed, then screw out the valve counterclockwise buy ALL THE WAY until it comes out. There are 2 O-rings on the stem of the valve that wear out, Cut these off with a sharp knife, go to your local hardware store, buy 2 new ones for 50 cents, install new O-rings, and reverse the disassembly procedure. Voila, no more leaky steam valve!

I think you have a chrome steam wand end.
To froth properly, there is a very small hole on the side of the chrome steam wand that injects small bubbles into the milk, the hole is located aprox 1/4" down from top of the chrome wand, if this hole blocks up you can only heat the milk, not froth. I commonly use a stripped tin tie wire or a sewing needle to clear the hole . Clean the hole,do not enlargen the hole.
