Can not open some programs in XP

I have tried to open my Drafix QuickCad by the desktop shortcut and also using the link in the all programs menu, and program will not load. When I use the restart computer button the program will start and appear just before the computer shuts down. I have recently downloaded service pack 3 for Windows XP. I have three different type design programs and none will open until the computer will start shuting down. The programs do not show up in the add/remove program in the control panel. My Open Office program works fine and will open as normal.

I have had a similar problem with my version of Musictime by Passport. Worked fine for many years on win95 and eariler win 3.5. Now I get "Anastasia font" when I open the program. Solution: there is an upload from GVOX about $70. Or , upgrade to Encore, which is XP compatible. Otherwise , Setup
the program and tick fonts only , each time you startup the computer.

Why can't i open desktop shortcut?

Right-click the shortcut, then properties, then second tab.
If you can't access it, or the program link is greyed, or missing, then recreate it.
If it seems correct, try and run the program directly, maybe it's malfunctionning.

If you're using Windows XP you can try this:

Go to control panel, open Add/Remove programs, on the left side click on Add/Remove windows components, put a check mark on outlook express and then click next. It will activate Outlook Express again on your Windows XP.

I have had an account with AOL for years without a problem but when I click on my desktop icon it will not open. What has happened and how do I fix it?

Hi there,

AOL shortcut was created on your desktop. Due to some technical issues, the configuration might have changed. Do not worry. I will help you to re-create another shortcut of AOL on your desktop for one time click and work,
When the AOL software is installed, a shortcut is created on your Windows desktop, allowing you to quickly and easily sign on. If your desktop icon is missing, or if it points to a version of the software other than the one you would like, follow these instructions.

To create an AOL icon on your desktop

1. On the Start menu, select Programs, then click Windows Explorer (on Windows XP, select All Programs, Accessories, then click Windows Explorer).
2. Browse to the folder that has your AOL software (e.g., C:\Program Files A File is an electronic document which can be text, pictures, sounds, videos or whole programs. Reminder: Never download files from someone you don't know. Files may contain dangerous Trojan Horse programs that may capture your AOL password, severely damage your computer, or contain objectionable graphics. To report a violation in an attached file, please forward the e-mail to screen name TOSReports.\America Online 9.0).
3. Click the file waol.exe once to select it.
4. On the File menu, click Create Shortcut.
5. Drag the new shortcut icon (Shortcut to waol.exe) to your Windows desktop.

Notes

·
You can rename your shortcut to something more meaningful to you. Simply press F2 on your keyboard while the shortcut is selected, type a new name, then press ENTER.
·
To delete a shortcut, drag it to the Recycle Bin. Your AOL software will still be on your computer.

That should work. For further reference, click the link;

Hi There! I am having problem opening my hp director program

  1. Open HP Director using one of the following methods:
    • From the desktop : On your computer's desktop, look for the HP Director icon (c01425509.gif), and then double-click it.
    • From the Windows taskbar : Click Start , click All Programs , click the HP orHewlett-Packard folder, and then click HP Director .
Although HP Director does not appear to be open , it is open and loaded into the computer's memory, but it does not open in a new window as usual.
  2. Without navigating to another open window, press Alt and Space bar at the same time. The Shortcut menu displays near the top-left corner of the computer. Figure 1: Shortcut menuc00833293.gif If the Shortcut menu does not open, repeat steps 1 and 2 until it does.
  3. Select Minimize from the Shortcut menu.HP Director displays (minimizes) as an item on the taskbar (the row of open software programs that appears at the bottom of the desktop screen). If HP Director does not minimize, click Minimize again until it does.
  4. Click the HP Director icon on the taskbar . The software opens and functions normally.

No new icon even after the program shows successful completion

OK, if the program can be found in the start menu, (Start/all programs/ "the program")
Then right click on it and select " Send to> " move across the next select box which appears and select " Desktop (create shortcut)

If your program isn't in the start menu, then go Start / Control Panel / Add or remove programs (XP) OR Programs & Features (Blista) check if the program you installed is listed, if it isn't reinstall it, if it is, Right Click on Start and select "Explore" Find the Folder in the tree called Program Files, in that folder find the Folder with your program name, in that folder drill down to you find the program name .exe (it will be type Application) double click and find the one that opens the required program eg. CinePlayer is here, Local Disk (C)/Program Files/ Roxio/Digital Media Plus/CinePlayer/CinePlayer.exe
Right Click and select Desktop (create shortcut) and/or Pin to Start menu

Desktop icons does not appear

Have you checked the Documents and Settings folder? Basically, Desktop Icons are just shortcuts/links to actual programs.

Since you know which programs had shortcuts to the desktop, use the My Computer in the Start Menu to go to the Program Files and Windows directories to go to the actual program. Then "Right-Mouse Click" these programs, choose "Send to" -> "Desktop". A shortcut will be created on the desktop.

For the standard Windows Icons, use the right mouse click, select Properties, Go to Desktop, click Advanced then select My Computer, etc....
