Loose stick shift

Hi
Have a good look at the parts the selector cables actually attach to. The nylon washers surrounding the ball joints wear away leaving a loose feel to gear changing or complete loss of movement. The selector rods can fail too but I've found usually it's just the rubber or nylon washers wearing out leaving very loose movement, sometimes even jamming when the metal parts crunch together. Look under bonnet and get somebody to wiggle the gear stick as you look at where the cables attach to the selector rods and check for loose play at all the components.
Replacement Nylon washer kits are easy to get hold of.

Maybe your shifter is loose at the tranmission or a stick could have got stuck up under the vehicle in this area. Many people drive over such items thinking no problem, sometime there is with a low riding car. Also look under hood for the connection to your thottle body to see if something has happened there...good luck...

all the gears at the top of the shift pattern use the same syncro.

your synchro's are starting to wear out.

likely the shift rails are worn inside the trans. In changing shift, you have removed the wear on the end of the stick, but not the corresponding wear where the stick fits into. It will need to be taken apart to repair this. (would not hurt to have synchros replaced at the same time.) OR, replace transmission if you have an inexpensive one available.

half shafts can cause a lot of problems with shifting and driving. but you could be loosing the third gear syncronizer.
