My PS3 60gb worked fine until five days ago. Today it is 10/10/09 and it will only play PS2 and DVD's. I have heard of several people who are having the same promble I have tried cleaning the system. If anyone has a remedy for this problem please let me know.
Re: PS3 will only play PS2 games and blue ray disc
Same thing happened to me two days ago, it would play everything but ps3 games. i called sony and they said it would be $150 again (in april i had a yellow light failure) so i looked online and someone suggested reformatting the harddrive and now it works fine......thank god

Okay, this is a REALLY common problem. It's more likely than not that
dust is on your lens. Best bet is to buy a Laser Eye Cleaner disc and
hope that fixes the problem. If not than you will have to contact
sony. If your still under warranty they will fix it for free. if the
warranty has expired, then they will charge you a repair fee

The problem is all in the settings. You probably have a 1080i television that cannot display in 1080p. To fix this go to the main menu and go to:
Then Blu Ray Disc and make it turn the Display BD in 1080p 24hz or whatever. Once you do that, start the Blu Ray Disc again, and you should be able to watch it. This all happened because your tv doesn't display 1080p.
The issue is the laser (actually has different diodes for blu ray, ps2 format and regular DVD.
Seems like in your case the only one that is burnt is the blu ray.
Send it back to Sony for repairs or if you do not have warranty purchase a replacement lens and install it yourself.
You are Partially right.
Ps3 actually work with 2 different diode laser inside.one is Blue and one is red and both working on 2 separate circuit but with the same coil.i do believe the blue diode is dead or defective and that`s why you are able to read dvd(regular one) but no blu ray dvd or ps3 games.Try to clean your lens or replace your laser and you will resolve your problem
