I had a demo of the JVC DLA-G10 hooked up via 15 pin connector to a 3dFusion
and watched DVDs at 1024x768 full screen and 1280x1024 windowed at 72 hertz. I
didn't see any scaling artifacts at all in 1024x768 mode. I tried hooking up to
the RGBHV inputs but couldn't get it to work.
My understanding is that when running the 3dFusion in letterbox mode that there
is no resolution loss when viewing 16/9 enhanced discs in 1024x768 full screen.
If I am wrong then somebody please tell me.
I believe that the JVC-DLA-G10 is the same unit as the Hughes-JVC G1000. Do you
know if this is the case?

No - not yet. I have requested a dealer list from them two days ago, but
got not any response yet. If I have the chance to look at this projectors
within a few weeks, I will do that.

Is there really an difference on NEC projectors?
When there is a difference then I would assume that it was a conference
room projector. The dealer wasn??t specialiced in home-theater.
I want to have a screen approximately twice that wide. The problem is that
CRT??s supporting the resolution and horizontal frequency of the MPACT card
are costing more than twice the price of the DreamVision. And the
DreamVision looks to me very overpriced for a 800x600 unit. Ok, I normally
get dealer conditions, but if I compare the price against the Davis...
I think you should seriously check whether the difference in picture
quality is worth the extra $3000.

Sorry - I had X-NO-ARCHIVE on for this group. Here is it again:
Hello,
today I took my pc equipped with a Leadtek S800 card to a dealer and had
the chance to compare the following projectors with vga source:
JVC G1000 D-ILA #
Mitsubishi LVP-X200 #
Both projectors were linked in daisy chain to have the identical picture
available on both. Reversing the sequence of both projectors had no visible
result in picture quality. So we left them connected in the same sequence
Leadtek-X200-D-ILA vor all tests.
This is no *scientific* test, all is subjective. YMMV.
1. Brightness
The X200 is much brighter than the G1000. The difference seems to more than
the 200 ANSI lumen difference of the specification. On about 3.5 m
projection distance we had to reduce the brightness control of the X200 to
the minimum and it still was brighter than the D-ILA. On the X200 this hat
consequences on the contrast. It was a bit lower than the D-ILA.
But this may be a bit different at home because the distance will be more
like 5 m instead of 3.5 m and the image size more like 3m diagonal instead
of 2 m. This will reduce the brightness considerably.
2. Colors
The D-ILAs colors were more *natural*, but toward yellow. This may be
adjusted by the color controls. The X200 colors were less saturated, more
toward blue and some read was missing. The color temperatur cannot
controlled on RGB sources. But ther is more complex color adjustment
available which can control the gamma curve for each R, G and B. As this
would have taken some time, we left it on the default values.
3. Resolution Quality
The following resolutions were tested:
800x600, 24bpp, 72Hz
1024x768, 24bpp, 72Hz
1280x1024, 24bpp, 72Hz (MPACT card has problems to keep up)
720x576, 18bpp, 72Hz
D-ILA X200
800x600 good very good
1024x768 good very good
1280x1024 very good fair
720x576 fair fair
The table shows my ratings regarding the quality of the image. Its only
relativ regarding this projectors. Absolutly the projectors show a good
image over all the standard resolutions. A big disappointment was the
720x576 DVD resolution. It seems to be the buildin scalers in both units
have big problem with scaling. They produce jagged lines and contours all
over the place. The D-ILA had more problems here because the panel
resolution is much higher and so a much higher scaling is necessary to fit
the panel. One could see the scaling problems very good with the control
panel of the EC application. The numbers in the display were very
flickering. But this was a special problem with the 720x576 resolution. It
seems to be that the scaler wasn??t prepared to handle this resolution very
well. The D-ILA had also slight jaggies with the 800x600 and the 1024x768
resolution. They were small but noticable.
A major disappointment was that both projectors couldn??t handle anamorphic
compression on RGB input. It is only possible to use this on source from
composite and s-video.
4. Noise
The D-ILA is really loud. The noise of the X200 in contrast is acceptable.
The heat of 400 W has to be removed in some way.
5. Price
The D-ILA costs about twice as much as the X200.
Summary
D-ILA X200
Brightness o +
Colors + o
Resolution Qual. o +
Price/Perform. o +
For me the decision is clear. If I don't see a better projector within the
next few weeks I will take the X200. With the normal resolutions used for
DVD viewing the image looks slightly better than the D-ILAs. The colors of
the X200 are acceptable and may be tweaked further to be more natural and
the noise is not as penetrating as the D-ILAs. And finally, the price is
more in the range my wife can live with. :-)
Don??t get me wrong. The D-ILA is still a fine projector, but it seems to be
it is not so well suited for DVD progressive output. It may be a bit
different when a anamorphic s-video source is used. But I really don??t
know. For DVD use the D-ILA seems to be a bit overpriced. For presentation
with windows the 1280x1024 resolution is great, but for DVD it seems to be
useless.
Conclusions
When buying a non CRT projector for progressive DVD playback select one
with a native resolution which matches the output resolution of the MPACT
card as exact as possible. The projectors buildin scalers seem to be not as
good as the scaler of the MPACT card. So if you prefer the 800x600
resolution then buy one with exactly this resolution. If the slightly
softer image with 1024x768 tastes you more, then take one with that
resolution. If you want one with anamorphic support on RGB sources, try it
first if that really works.
But the best way for you to find out what is the best for *you* is to take
your pc with the MPACT card to the dealer and do a shotout between your
favorite projectors.
If you have further questions I will be happy to answer them.

Was it a NEC conference room projector, or a NEC home theater
projector, out of curiousity?
I'm aiming at a 5 feet or 6 feet wide screen, so I can live
with a good 800x600 DLP projector such as the DreamVision - I'm
trying to get a couple of local home theater retailers to look
into it, since I want to evaluate it against some of the good
CRT's.

has no record of any of his posts for some reason (weird). Alternatively,
Frank - can you tell me what you thought of the JVC G10? How was the
color/resolution/brightness? How was the black level? How did it compare to
good CRTs/LCDs/DLPs? How much is it where you are?

That's what I thought - Using the 24bit tweak with the MPACT 2
and scaling to 800x600 and 1024x768 is the ideal solution, as I
thought.
I am in the market for a non-CRT projector as well, and I am
torn between getting an 800x600 model, or a 1024x768 model.
Or going for a tube - but that will set me back a lot.
Have you taken a look at the DLP projectors? Some new ones
such as the DreamVision DL500 claims to be better than all LCD
projectors except for some really, really high priced models.
It could possibly offer the best of all worlds, including better
black levels than LCD projectors, and more. (At least, last I
saw, the blacks on DLP's are better than on LCD's)
