Most of the time, whenever you connect anything to a windows computer, it makes a sound, on a mac it appears on the desktop, linux is the same as the mac.
Windows: in case it is a windows computer. if you connect drive, you should get a popup window. in case you did not get it, there are is something wrong or the setup was changed. if the setup was change, you can get your drive by going to my computer and look for a drive letter that was not there before. for example, look for a drive name. C is usually your main drive, D sometimes is configured as recovery partition on Dell,Sony, Toshiba, and other brands, but the generic ones probably don't have the recovery. so your drive can be D, F.... Z. depending on how many stuff or virtual hardware you have in your computer, or network drive.

now if you look in my computer and it is not there, the drive is not initialized yet. initializing a drive means to format it so that your OS windows or Linux or Macintosh can read it.
in windows, START > RIGHT CLICK ON MYCOMPUTER OR COMPUTER > manage. Then click on Disk management tools> look for a drive with black shades and right click on it and choose initialize in the drop down menu. that should do it on windows. I know my way around macs but so far i will leave the windows help here. if you need help with mac or linux. write youngneif@gmail.com

Transfer stuff from a working and put it on another hard drive

The easiest way is to connect your hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter or USB hard drive dock, then plug this USB adapter ot dock into the USB port of your computer. The computer will see this as an external storage device, you can then open the various folders and copy the folders or files to the computer,
If you want to copy these folders or files to another hard disk then connect the other hard drive to the USB hard drive adapter or USB hard drive dock and plug it into your computer and copy the folders or files from your computer to the external hard drive.

External hard drive not accessible

A Hitachi USB external hard drive is a device that acts as portable, removable storage for your personal computer. If you need additional space to house files on your computer but don't want to go to the trouble of installing an internal drive inside the case, a USB external hard drive is your best option. These drives are "plug and play" devices, which means that very little can actually go wrong. If you're having problems, fixing them shouldn't take more than a minute or two.

Check your connections. A USB cable needs to be connecting your Hitachi external hard drive to your computer. Your external hard drive's power cable also needs to be plugged into a functional wall outlet, surge protector, extension cord or power strip. Make sure your Hitachi USB external hard drive is turned to "On." An "On/Off" button is present on the front of the unit. If the indicator light around said button is not illuminated, the drive is "Off" and your computer won't be able to recognize it. Press it to turn it on and then try to access your drive again. Format your hard drive. If your Hitachi USB external hard drive doesn't currently have a file system on it, you won't be able to use it to store data. Open up the "Computer" icon in the "Start" menu. Right-click on your USB external hard drive's icon and click "Format." Click "Start." This will install a file system on your Hitachi USB external hard drive. After this process is finished, you will now be able to use your drive. Restart your computer. Certain models of computers (especially older models) won't recognize new hardware unless your computer boots with the hardware already connected. Leave your USB drive plugged in and restart your computer. Once you do this, your Hitachi USB external hard drive should appear as normal in the "Computer" folder with all of your other drives. Hope this helps.

Unable to access files

To access the files off the hard drive another way - remove the hard drive from the case and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and then plug it into a working computer's USB port. If the computer see the hard drive as an external hard drive/storage device and you can open the folders and files then backup your data. This also indicated the hard drive is OK and the Western Digital case/electronics is faulty.
To use this as an external USB hard drive, put the hard drive in an USB adapter case.

try testing it in another computer. if you have the same problem. then there might be an issue with the drive.

to recover your data. unplug external drive from the computer and open the external hard drive case. remove the hard drive inside. with you computer off and disconnected from the wall open the case to your computer. look and see how the hard drive inside is connected in your computer and add the external the same way. you might need a cable to connect it. you can simply disconnect the cdrom and plug the hard drive instead. make sure the external hard drive is not touching any electronics inside the pc. now you can turn on the computer. give the computer a minute to detect the new drive and assign a drive letter. navigate to my computer and select the newly added hard drive. copy and paste all the data you want to save. after everything has been backed up format the external drive to clear any bugs that may be causing it to be recognised in its case.

when finished remove the hard drive, plug in the cdrom, close the case, plug back into the wall, and return external drive to its case.

I replaced the USB adapter chord and know there's not enough power to run the drive. I think I need a DC adapter, 5V, 1A, that fits the drive.

If you get an error message "Insufficient power to operate USB device" when you plug in a USB device into the computer's USB port then this device is drawing power that the USB port can supply.
In case such as this, you need to purchased a powered USB hub and connect this hub into the computer's USB port and then connect the USB device into this powered USB hub.

Simpletech 500 gb external hard drive

There is a power consumption work-around untill a Y usb wire can be purchased; the main power cable must still be used at all times but this workaround should only remain temporary!!!
Simpletech should have included this so laptop users could use the drive as their capacity is better than the packaged slimmer simpletech portable backup drives for laptops, which does include the Y cable....
1) unplug usb while powered and unknown hardware is present on laptop...
2) turn power switch off from the external HDD...
3) return power switch to on from the external HDD...
4) plug in usb connection to laptop...
Autoplay should read from external HDD!!!
**** Save some $$$ and buy a Y shaped cable to provide sufficient amount of power from laptop usb
ports, cause it's necessary to use 2 of your ports to provide power in addition to the main power from HDD to wall****
