"buffer overrun detected" this shuts down adsubtract

  • Anonymous Oct 12, 2008

Appears to be the same. MS Visual C++ Runtime Library, Buffer Overrun, in AdSubtract, AdSub.exe. First occured 10/11/08 after successfully visiting a particular commercial web site. Buffer overrun error now occurs shortly after reboot, even without opening IE.

My problem is exactly the same. I have adsubtract on 3 computers, a laptop, and 2 desktops. Buffer overrun appears when booting, and intermitanly when attempting to use the program.

I also had the same problem starting October 9, 2008. Fortunately I found this site through Google and have applied the fix as described by Clif4949. It works perfectly now. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Additional note: when I finally figured out that AdSubtract was the reason I couldn't access the internet, (I had received the "buffer overrun detected" warning) and I had clicked OK on that window. Finally, I just ignored the warning and left it on screen (its window [Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library] still open but behind other windows). Then I was able to access the internet normally, except for the annoying extra work of dealing with the alarm. Clif4949 is to be thanked again. Yeah!

I had exactly the same problem, but your Best Solution has fixed it for me too. Very many thanks, becuase AdSubtract Pro is an excellent program that does exactly what I want.

I had the same problem. So did my husband. We knew it had to be something trend micro did since it happened on both computers. I tried everything to fix it. I emailed trend micro and they sent me directions on how to delete it, instead of fixing it. I tried myself first to uninstall it, but then I couldn't connect to explorer at all. I was able to connect with aol and firefox but not IE. I had to reinstall it to get online. Fortunately I I found your solution here and tried it, and hooray it worked. Thanks so much.....I loved the program and hated to have to give it up...those'd think they would have told me in their email instead of jerking me around. Thanks so much.

Thanks to "Best Solutions." You solved my problem with AdSubtract Pro. I did not

want to give up using the program; it is really a nifty one. Thanks also for getting

back to me so promptly with the solution.

Thanx so much Cliff4949. I had the same headache for the past few days and assumed that it was due to my isp. I spoke to them and had a service tech come to the house. Did a System Restore and removed the program. I was all ready to download another pop-up blocker program. Finally I googled "AdSubtract buffer overrun" and found you. Your resolution worked perfectly.

Adsubtract "phones home" everytime it is started. it looks to which then refers to (the purchaser of intermute). trendmicro recently changed their website to disable adsubtract (either wittingly or unwittingly)

Here is how to fix:
1) first find your hosts file. it is usually located in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
the file is "hosts" and it has no file extension.
2) open the hosts file with notepad.
3) add the following line to the bottom:

Adsubtract will work once again if you follow these instructions, but you will no longer be able to visit the website "" unless you change your hosts file back the way it was.

I have an older PC with: ie 8 that has been updated by microsoft, and now seems to be getting to slow...My internet security keeps giving me messages that Ie is taking up alot of memory. I already added...

There is a memory leak in IE8 that MS won't admit to, but many pro's have reported. I would suggest you install Google Chrome, Firefox or Opera, and use one of them as your default browser, opening IE8 only when absolutely necessary (some sites won't work with anything but IE).

There's really not much else that can be done...except to wait for MS to admit the problem, and issue a patch to correct it. And, given their whittling away of support for XP, I'm not holding my breath.

Convert Stubborn Webpage to pdf...

I have come across some websites that I wanted to save the page for later review. I found that I was having some problems with certain sites. I found a ways around it.

What you need:adobe acrobat pro (latest version) or better popupcop.

There may be a simpler way to do this but if found that this works:

When at a webpage that you want to copy (YOU MUST BE USING IE AND HAVE BOTH POPUPCOP INSTALLED AND ADOBE ACROBAT PRO OR HIGHER, CONVERT TO .PFG), slide popupcop popup intensify bar to the far left, now click on adobe acrobat icon to convert webpage to .pdf document. I have yet to find a webpage where this trick does not work.

I't might help you a lot. Good luck!

1st: can't open gmail w ie; 2nd ie keeps shutting down

Hi, It seems that you might have installed some addons for IE and now you are in the situation. All you need to do it open Internet Options from Control Panel. Then in Advanced tab, click on Reset. Resetting Internet Explorer resets all settings to manufactures' default and in the process you will lose all saved passwords on Internet Explorer and you will have to re-enter them again upon use. Once done, fire-up IE and click on Tools menu > Internet Options and reset IE from Advanced tab once again from here as well. It means you will reset IE two times, first from Control Panel and then from IE window itself. Once done try to use IE and see the result.
However there are few addons available with Mozilla Firefox that resembles IE inside and opens all webpages that requires IE only. Download Coral IE Tab from:
Installed the addons and switch the view to IE to open all webpages that supports IE only.

Buffer overrun in adsubtract pro

From IE toolbar, click tools, internet options. Then click the connections tab. Click lan settings button. uncheck the radio box that says Use a proxy server.

IE will work again, but with no adsubtract. A possible reason the fix didn't immediately work for you is that the dns cache needed to be flushed. accomplish this by clicking start, run, cmd.
in the black box, type ipconfig /flushdns
then press enter.
