So you either get a wireless router or wireless access point. WTP? Both plug into the existing modem or router and you have to do some setup to make it work. It depends on the brand and what you get.

Hi leftella, First of all, I would like to ask you few questions. 1.Who is your ISP(Internet service provider) like verizon, Bell, Comcast? 2.How many ports you see at the back of the Modem?like WAN, Ethernet, LAN, DSL, Data? 3.How many ports you see at the back of the Router?like Internet,Ethernet,WAN, LAN? 4.What is the make and model of the laptop with which you want to go wireless?
To setup the router you don't need any CD, just need to connect the Modem to router and router to your computer with hard wire Initially and then after setup, you can go wireless.

Wireless Network Reset - Belkin

If you are unable to connect your laptop wireless to your Belkin wireless access point/router, the easiest and fastest way to get going is to reset your router to the factory defaults. Cant get it to hook up right for some reason?

1.Connect modem to the one separate port of the router on which you would see Internet, Wan or Lan. 2. Connect one of the Four port of the router to the laptop or desktop. 3.Insert the disk that came with the router into the laptop drive and install it. 4. Turn on the wireless services on the laptop by hitting the wireless button the laptop. 5. Now, connect to the available wireless networks.

If you have trouble connecting to your modem, you may need to lock the speed down on the WAN port of your router to 10Mbps. Within the web-based configuration utility for the router, go to Tools > Misc and the option to select the WAN speed will be towards the bottom. Not all routers have this option.

Follow the steps configuring the router once again...

Step 1 Log into the web-based configuration by typing in the IP address of the router (default:192.168.0.1) in your web browser. The username is admin (all lowercase) and the password is blank (nothing).

Note: The address 192.168.0.1 is NOT on the Internet. The web-based configuration is built-in to the router.

Step 2 Click the Setup tab and then click the Internet button.

Step 3 Dynamic IP Address is the default value, however, if Dynamic IP Address is not selected as the WAN type, select Dynamic IP Address from the drop down menu. Click Clone Mac Address. Click on Save Settings to save the changes.

Step 4 Click on Status. Under WAN, Click DHCP Renew. If it does not get an IP address or times out, then continue with the next step.

Step 5 Power cycle the cable modem and router using the following steps:

Turn the cable modem off (first)

Turn the router off

Leave them off for 2 minutes**

Turn the cable modem on (first)

Wait until you get a solid cable light on the cable modem

Turn the router on

Wait 30 seconds ..

Step 6 Follow Step 1 again to log back into the web configuration. Click the Status tab and click the Device Info button. If you do not already have a public IP address under the WAN heading, click on the DHCP Renew button.

Asus WL 520gu can't connect internet

1, connect your wireless router with cable to your laptop,
2. Login into your Asus-WL520gu and setup your wireless how you want it to run." do not bother with putting your username settings in there"
3. In your Asus-WL-520gu after setting up your wireless turn the DHCP off in it.
4. Now connect the cable that you have connected to your laptop to your router instead of your laptop.
""You should now be able to connect to the wireless with your settings. and connect anything ells you want to the other 4 ports on the back of you wireless router"" note: do not connect anything to the WAN port as it is used for DSL modems; and not Routers with ADSL modem.
when connecting a router to a router - the one that is connecting you to the internet needs DHCP turned on because it is the one that will be giving you IPs and Gateway settings - the other router such as wireless router after setting it up needs its DHCP turned off - other wise you will have 2 routers trying to do the same thing with ip's and gateways. And you should never connect a modem router to the WAN port as it is a modem router and NOT just a DSL-modem. The WAN port is intended for DSL-modems only. Not only consumers but also many technicians make that mistake

When i hook it up i get the laptop to pick up the signal but the desktop will not go online

on the hind side of the modem how many ports do you see
my guess one port slightly seperated and named INTERNET or WAN and four more ports numbered 1,2,3,4

now connect the network cable from the modem to the WAN / INTERNET port and connect the laptopand PC to the ports1,2

now check to see if there is connection to only on Laptop or both

but if you have conection to only the laptop/PC connected to port1 then try this small trick

move the laptop to port 3 and in port 1 connect the cable from the modem which was connected to the WAN / INTERNET port

and u r set to go

I tried to reset my security password and now it won't work.

Make sure you have the physical connection connected properly.

-Modem should be connected to the Internet/WAN port of the router.
-Your laptop must be connected to port 1 of the router as well.
-Make sure you can go online hardwired to the router.

Then configure the wireless settings of the router by accessing the router setup page http://192.168.2.1, change the wireless settings.

Connecting to the internet with wireless router

Here's how to connect it.

PC > Connect to port 1 of the router
Modem's Ethernet > Connect to router's Internet or WAN port

Then do a power cycle, unplug the power to the modem and router. Wait for 30 seconds then plug the modem first, wait for the lights to go solid, then power up the router. Your laptop should see the wireless signal now.

Hi there!

I want to help you out. I have some questions to ask you first:

1. What brand and model are your wireless router and laptop?
2. Does the laptop have a built-in wireless card or you installed one?
3. If it's has its built-in wireless card, check the wireless switch of the laptop. ICheck if it is on or off (some laptops sometimes has an on/off switch)
4. Check if the wireless light on your router is on (it's sometimes refered to "WLAN")
5. How many wired & wireless computers do you have and their operating system?

Your physical connections are correct. BTW, can you also specify what port from the modem is going to the router? Some routers have 1 port named "Internet or WAN" and 4 ports for "Ethernet." Check if the modem is connected to the "Internet or WAN" port.

3. Now connect your ISP modem to wireless router, The modem should connect to your WAN cable.

4. And Give the wireless router's IP in your laptop as Gateway (In TCPIP settings of your Laptop wireless adapter / or configure DHCP)
