HDD/DVD Recorder RH265 or 266

When powered on, "read" shows on screen for 15-20 seconds then machine cuts out. Then it starts up again showing "read" again. This continues repeatedly not going any further. Any suggestions as to the remedy for this? Thanks

Sorry, no joy with the assistance given. It's the HDD that seems to be the problem. When in standby there is no clock just lines in its place. Help! Thanks

With no clock and just a few lines, the most likely problem is in the power supply. This symptom suggests a low 12V and 5V supply. This can be caused by defective capacitors amongst other things. If you are comfortable working with electronics, you may be able to resolve this yourself. Let me know and I'll try to provide more details and instructions.

To remove the disc:

There is a little hole under the slot for the cd or dvd drive, and if you stick a bent paperclip, (I use a dull needle) it will make the tray slide out, or go in. If that doesn't jolt the drive back into reality, try going into the Devive Manager (Control Panel> System> Hardware) and uninstalling the drive through Windows. Windows should "find" it again on a reboot.

Here how to gain access to the service menu:
    1) Press and hold together the up and down arrows on the recorder (not the remote)
    for about 6 seconds.
    2) Use the left & right buttons on the remote to move through the op codes
And the up & down buttons to change the codes, press enter to save the changes, then menu/list button to exit. The recorder will switch off.

Post a copy of your OP codes (only the two digits after each ops from OP1: to OP8:) and then I will tell you what you can change to get added functions and how to upgrade the firmware, getting region free etc

Clean the optical lector first. If the problem is with your HDD, try to reset the system.
If still problem remains trying to formatting the HDD, if doesn't work the HDD must be replaced.

When that happens, it means you have a lens problem.

Use a dvd lens cleaner kit , like the ones that you see clicking here.

If that does not work, you will need to take apart the unit, access the lens pickup, and clean the lens directly, using isopropyl alcohol and a cotton sticks.

If that helps, don't forget to accept the solution.

Note: It is not the hard drive, when system on the HD, or HD is faulty you get an error code, you get the two lines because the system could not read the disk.

    Do the following:

If there is a disk inside eject it.

    Unplug power for ten minutes.

    Perform lens cleaning .

    That should work.

Then it is the disk stuck inside the problem, that is also reason for the two lines.

To remove it unplug power, plug power cord back, turn on the unit, and while you are turning on keep pressing repeatedly the eject button.

Do this several times, until it works.
When you succeed in ejecting the disk before the unit starts reading it, you have solved the problem.

Do not forget to accept the solution if you solve the problem.

How did you solve the problem? did you format the HDD as suggested?

If you still face the problem then you will have to send this in for a repair because a read error indicates a problem with the lens not reading the disc.

see if the player tries to read the disc. Load a disc and listen.
    Does
the player make squealing noises or is it totally quiet? Squealing
noises may indicate that the player is trying to synchronize with the
disc but can't due to an obstruction on the lens or in the laser path
inside the pickup or a defect in the pickup. This can also be caused by
an intermittent signal problem due to a faulty ribbon cable.

    Totally
silent means that the photo sensor is not getting any usable input from
the laser at all, meaning that the pickup is "blind" for lack of a
    better word.
This can be caused by an obstruction of the beam by
foreign matter on the lens or inside the pickup all the way to a
marginal or failed laser diode and/or photosensor array. This can also
be caused by a bad ribbon cable with one or more severed traces.

    You
could try to clean the optics. This is the most common malfunction as
far as i know in all disc players. It would involve taking the cover
off and finding a way to expose the lense, and then cleaning it with a
very gentle brush. some players have a cover for the lense that swings
to the side during playing, this greatly reduces the chance of dust
accumulating, but its still worth the try.

If you actually see dust on the lense, then its just that simple. clean, close, play.

It may also be worth your while to check on the small shafting that
guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grome, dust and
solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser
eye then fails to read the next track.

VHS plays for 5 to 10 seconds then power switches off

I think you might have a problem with the VHS mechanism. Perhaps damage to the mechanical parts. If the mechanism can't perform the task it has been set after a very short period it will send a message to the electronics to shut down. This prevents further damage to the tape or system.

When the dvd/hdd is on it not show any picture on the tv

Do it show its Logo on screen. If it shows the logo, and does not show picture, the fault is with its pick-up lens system. If it do not show the Logo too, the fault is with its main power regulator board [SMPS]. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. My dvd player rdr-hxd860 seems to be frozen on 'welcome'

I've had the same problem. I've actually unplugged the unit and it's been unplugged for probably about two weeks. When I reconnected the power this morning the problem persisted where the DVD Recorder was stuck on the Welcome Screen. As a last ditch effort I pressed and held the power button for 10 to 15 seconds until the word "Welcome" dissapeard of the screen and back on. This seems to have reset the unit. I know I should have tried this a long time ago. So much for reading the instruction manual! I'm just glad it's working again!

Black box on top of screen during HDD playback mode

Problem solved! Thanks Panasonic Tech Support!!

In case anyone else has this problem, I'll tell you what I found out. This model DVD recorder does not have closed captioning functionality at all. So if this happens to yours, it is not the DVD recorder causing the problem. It is a setting on either your TV, cable box, or whatever else you have hooked up to it.

In my case, my daughter must have accidentally hit the "Text" option on our TV's caption menu. I changed that option back to its original setting, and the mysterious black box is gone.

My Sansui recorder records blank when I use the timer!

first of all make sure the time and date is set correctly on your recorder (options or set-up usually) second make sure an aerial input is going to your recorder (not just to your tv (the recorder is in the loop with aerial lead to it then from it to tv)) third make sure the on-board tuners are tuned to the correct tv channels (recorder is just a tv without a screen and has its own channels that need to be tuned in)

Hdd error

try replacing the red sata cable which runs from the HDD under the DVD drive to the main board on the right-hand side. these are a common problem on these models, there cheap and unreliable. you can purchase a better quality cable from a computer store for little money. HDD ERROR is'nt necessery an HDD fault as i found out with my rdr-hx525. if however the HDD is faulty and you buy a replacement, once installed you will need to pair the new HDD with the unit by entering the service mode by unplugging the AC then while holding down open/close and play together then re-insert the AC lead while still holding open/close and play and wait until you see an "S" in the display then let go and the service mode will appear on the tv screen. go to no.9 HDD mode, press enter then go to no.3 Write ID then it will say "execute write ID?" yes and press enter and then it will say "writing HDD serial ID.... OK" once this is done, exit the service mode by keeping your finger on the power button for approx 10secs. your DVD recorder should now recognise the new HDD. if you don't follow this process, you will still have an HDD error message as your DVD recorder will have your old HDD installed and won't recognise your new one. given the amount of time since you posted this fault, you may still have the unit in question in which case i hope this solution is helpful, or for anyone else with the same problem.
