I have a 600e ibm that will not boot up. When you turn the power on, it acts like it wants to start up but the screeen will remain black. There are 4 panel lights on the top and only the left (yellow) and right (green) will come on. I believe the yellow might be the hard drive light, not sure. I did take the hard drive out of this one and installed it on another 600 e and it ran fine.

Turn off power to the computer. Wait about 30 seconds. Hold down the F1 key while you turn on power and keep holding down that key until the setup screen comes up. Go to the network boot section and disable Network Boot. Save setting and restart. That should fix it.
ok go to the bios system by pressing esc or F12 or F2 key when the computer restart. After that change the boot sequence. CD drive first after that HDD or follow the instruction that are given by computer in bellow or side, after configure just press F10 for saving.
Do a search for memtest86.iso. Burn this image to a cd and reboot your computer. When your computer reboots it should begin checking your memory for errors. If you still have problems it might be your hard drive.
You can go into the BIOS and change the boot order of the drive devices,change the CD as the 1st boot device.
As the laptop boots up, press F12, this will allow you to select the CD as a boot device.
