No. In addition to the mechanical shutter which has to open and then recock, it has a reflex mirror (the R in SLR) which has to flip out of the way and then drop back down.

Can my Nikon D50 be fixed or do I need to send it for repair?

This happens during malfunction of mirror and shutter.that is when cliked shutter opens but mirror did not go up so blank monitor screen hence no image in card. Take to skilled technician to replace shutter loader mechanism.

I get "Err" on the

The ERR message indicates a camera malfunction. In my D-90 manual it says that it can be cleared by releasing the shutter. The only way to do that is to turn the camera off and back on. Rarely, that won't work and you have to remove and reinstall the battery.

The manual also says that it this have frequently or persist to contact a Nikon authorized service center. I would contact Nikon tech support at www.Nikon.com and discuss the problem them before contacting an authorized service center.

I was told my nikon D50 needs a shutter replacement. Is this problem common for D50's? Trying to decide if it should be fixe.

Nikon shutters are typically good for 100,000 trips...do you think you've taken that many pics?

My Nikon D50 is suddenly underexposing the lower half of each photo. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Are these flash photos? If so, make sure you don't have the lens hood on. Also make sure the shutter speed is slower than the sync speed.

Otherwise, is this happening at a variety of shutter speeds? With fresh batteries?

Shutter problem

30 seconds is the maximum setting for the D50. Anything greater than this you can easily time with a watch using the 'bulb' setting.  Most SLR's are like this.

D50 not taking pictures

Not experienced on this but if not taking pictures it could be the `mirror ` is not moving have you tried taking off the lense again and re fitting, you may not have fitted properly.
My own opinion is that pushing the shutter shouldnt cause a problem. Do the white dots line up?
Wish I could be of more help.
