In most cases when the CD does not play it is possible that the optical head is a suspect. Sometimes it might pick up ordinary audio CD but will not play other formats. This indicates that the optical head is weak and so there is no detection or scanning of the CD. If the optical is working the tracks will be read immediately but with no scanning the laser head can be defective.

The main motor will not work in some cases as unless the tracks are read the drive motor will not work with signal from the processor. Also in some cases the central motor base can shift and so the distance to the disc can be more resulting in low detection. You can pull up the spindle to come closer.
Sometimes certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it will not be read and so will reject. Hence it is ideal to manually clean the laser head eye using a cleaning swap /cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.
If there is no result then watch if the CD spins or tries to spin. If so the board seems to work unless a test is taken on the main board but the possibility of a defective optical head can be the suspected fault.
If any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of a malfunction of the main processor board

I have a pioneer home theater HTZ585 DVD system. Since yesterday, i get 'SUB COM' message displayed (blinking) and nothing seems to work anymore. Any suggestions?

I can't find that message in the manual but I would guess it's trying to tell you something is wrong going out to the subwoofer. Trace the wiring. If you don't see anything wrong, disconnect the sub and see if the message disappears or changes.

I have a Sony DAV S500 AV system and with certain DVD and with the volumn just over 20 (not really that loud), the system shuts down and PROTECT shows in the message window. I read somewhere on the web...

If the subwoofer and other speakers were included with the system, THAT is what they're designed for. Mixing and matching with other products is usually discouraged if not forbidden.

If the problem returns with connection of the sub it may be defective or on its way out. Internal damage to the voice coil from being overdriven could have melted or worn through the insulation and it would cause intermittent undesired electrical contact or load variation under certain conditions, like high volumes.

If your speaker level settings are unusually boosted for the sub you may be overdriving it.

Need a user manual or electranic guide

Below there is a link to your manual.I think this site stopped allowing us to post links though. If it does not work, here is what to do.Go to retrevo.com At the top click on menus, then DVD players. It will list many makers alphabetically.Go down to Philips.Once the screen appears with the model #'s,you have to scroll down some more to get to your model. At first yours does not appear, but you will see it.Screens,sub-screens,sub-screens of sub-screens,etc. I have this site saved because it is the best one I have found and you may want to also. The manual is a PDF file which everyone seems to know about these days.If you have any problems or questions, just comment here and I will get an autolink to your post.Good luck,Greg

Sub-title does not appear.

It's called "closed captioning" and should be under the menu/setup button. Subtitles are only for DVD players.
