Every machine is a little different, but the basics are the same. Our 7th grade Home Eco. teacher taught us the first day... "...Start at the thread spool, thread guide, thread guide, tension, take up lever, thread guide, thread guide, needle. Learn this and you can thread any sewing machine"
she was right, As this hold true for my kenmore, juki, singer and new home machines. Same basics for industrial machines too.
Top thread snapping. Do you have an idea of there it is breaking?
First I would check the needle throat plate and needle. If you have stab marks on your needle plate, examine it closely for a crack. (get out the magnifying glass or jewelers loop) I recently fixed a problem I had with an old singer that kept breaking the top thread by replacing the needle plate. The old needle plate was so damaged it had actually made a knife edge which consistently cut the thread right at that location.
Change your needle and make sure it is the proper size for your thread. Too narrow of an eye can shred the thread causing it to break.
Next, check anything along your threading process that could be catching or snagging the thread. A worn or chipped thread guide can be a real problem.
Also make sure your thread hasn't dropped down below your thread cones and wrapped around the thread spindle. This would cause extra tension that might not be readily apparent.

make sure the needle is inserted correctly
check the needle clamp screw to make sure it's tight
the needle is to fine for the fabric being used
also make sure under the needle plate there is no lint
also in bobbin area
also check the tension
needle should be 16x257 Industrial machine needle with no flat side. It does have a long groove on one side and a scallop just above the eye of the needle on the other side. On this machine the needle is inserted so that the long groove goes to the left and it threads left to right. The thread breakage may be caused by a rough place on the hook. You need to turn the machine on it's back and look and feel all the way around the hook assembly. If you find a rough spot it can be removed with an emery stick. If it's not a rough spot, then the machine is probably out of time. sewman7
