Question about iRiver H10 MP3 Player

Iriver h10 20gb not recognized in UMS

My iRiver H10 20gb worked just fine up until recently when it stopped being recognized by any PC I connect it to in UMS mode (emergency connect). I have since tried it on half a dozen computers. Windows XP, Vista, and even a Mac at my college which it always used to work on. I'm running Rockbox software so I can't try MTP either. I thought it might be the cable but have also since replaced the cable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just to clarify a few points - The device functions normally in every other respect. It can also charge from USB. In XP and Vista, it comes up with USB device not recognized, and the device manager sees it as an unknown device and any attempt to manually search for drivers just results in it saying that the best drivers are already installed. When I connect to the Mac, it just does nothing at all...

I sometimes have to reset my iRiver in order for my Mac to see it. I have an h10 5gb, to do this, I have to remove the battery then reconnect the battery. Then I connect it the usual way to get into the UMS mode. But I think with yours it has it's own reset button. If it was working and now has stopped, I would think you just need to reset it and try again.

Iriver h10 not always shutting down properly. Sometimes have to reset

sounds like your power on switch may have an issue or your hard drive is severely fragmented or is going south. Hook up the H10 20gb to your pc via the UMS emergency connection trick (see here) . Try defragging your hard drive first..
Good luck!

  • Turn on the hold switch (so that you don't accidentally turn the H10 on all the way).

4.6GB Iriver H10 Merory says 2.9GB remaining but there is nothing on the player.

Considered formatting disk?
For you what this would mean is just a complete refresh of the device (you will lose everything).

You will need to read everything carefully.

I converted my H10 to the "UMS" mode mentioned in the site a long time back (so I could directly transfer files as a USB mass storage device) and had the issue mentioned in that post. Works great. Converting to UMS mode is done here http://www.misticriver.net/wiki/index.php/H10_Firmware_Conversion:_MTP/UMS

You will also need the iRiver Plus software that you can download for free here http://www.iriver.com.au/iriver/index.cfm?pageID=10001&

Try plugging it in to the computer first while the device is off. Then, hold the O key and press the power button. Worked for me.

Iriver H10 "System files missing".

Okay, my IRiver broke with the same kind of problems but I've managed to fix it!

First off i connected the IRiver to the pc, and whilst it was connecting, pressed the 'select' button (the one on the front with the circle on it) to force it to connect.

Next i right clicked on it and selected format to wipe everything off it (just to make sure it was blank).

Next, go to www.iriver.com and on the left hand side click Support->Download and click on H10 in the product box. On that page should be a file to download called "[MTP]H10 5G/5G Pure/6G Firmware Upgrader/Recovery Tool(US & EU only)". The download icon is just underneath the title of it, so download, unpack using winrar ot winzip etc, then double click and follow the instructions.

It wiped the songs off, but i have an IRiver that works! Its an awful product in my opinion, but better to have it working than not. Can't guarentee that it'll work for everyone but it fixed mine first time.

Hope it helps!

System files missing

I fixed this problem for my mate, here's what I did:

1) plugged in H10 to pc that didn't have any iriver software on it
a) I've read if you press the "o" button on the iRiver H10 when connecting it will just connect as a usb mass storage device
2) the H10 now appears as a mass storage device
3) right click on the drive, and select format ( I choose quick format)
4) install the iRiverFirmware updater from http://iriveramerica.com/support/mtpupdate/
5) when you run the updater, it found the H10, then asked if the device was from USA or Europe, mine was from Europe
6) It stated that the iRiver firmware was v0.0, and would install v2.51 (I've seen v2.53 available on the european iriver website but could not download it).
7) proceed with installing the updated firmware
8) on the last screen it says, unplug to complete firmware update - NOTE press Finish first before unplugging
9) switching on the iRiver it 'rebooted' a few times and then when the menu appeared, I connected to the pc and just dropped some mp3 files into the music directory and all was okay.

hope this helps.

Mike.
