Question about Refrigerators

2 Answers

I have an NEC refrigerator model FR480 eight years old that has stopped cooling. Called the technician who can't get information with regard to the electronic controls. It appears that the compresor and coolant are in order, but a signal is obviously being being sent to the equipment to stop cooling. With its relatively young years it seems incredible that it has already broken down and being advised to replace. Can you assist. Pieter

    ADDITIONAL COMMENTS.
The thermostats are apparently ok according to the technician, he believes that the problem is with the electronic control box on top of the fridge. In Australia NEC won't or cannot provide a service manual for this model and consequently it it just guess work trying to identify the source of the problem. It is also believed that these fridge models were made by Daewoo in Korea and badged as NEC.
Access to a service manual would help.

The only signal that can be sent to the equipment to stop cooling is the one from the thermostat. This is infact turning on and of the cooling system (compressor, fan , etc).

Did the technician test the thermostat?

If cooling is poor, another reason for poor cooling is the evaporator system preventing the coils from freezing at the back, see here:Cooling is poor

If there is not cooling at all, than can be a problem with the thermostat, the compressor, the evaporator fan, or a couple of relays that controls the load on the compressor. See here: It's not cool

If your fridge had just been repaired, call back the technician, ask him to check the parts descripted above, and have it fixed .

By inserting model number here you can get part list, part price and exploded views.

Hi, do you mean the signal to stop cooling is faulty?
I guess the thermostat is faulty. Its the one which detects the temperature and send signals to the circuit.

This model FRC445GM of mine has stopped running is there a reset button. Fridge is only 2yrs old

Good Afternoon Lenette,

I understand that your Frigidaire compact refrigerator, model# FRC445GM, has stopped running. There is a way you can reset your appliance. You will want to unplug it for 3-5 minutes. Once time has passed, plug it back in. If your refrigerator is still not cooling, I suggest contacting either the manufacturer, or your local authorized technician. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-
WP

Frigidaire refridgerator #frt21prhw1, not cooling or freezing

You said, your frigidaire refrigerator are not cooling

Check the outlet that it is still has power. You can plug a small lamp in to test it.
If there is power, wait 5 minutes before plugging the fridge back in and then see if it reset the system.
And how old is the fridge?
.
If not then you have a bad thermostat or leaking freon, and the pressure is too low to cool anything.

Or,if the compressor went then you may find this article I just read interesting!!!!!!

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense
.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

You said,
your fridge stop cooling including the freezer section, motor is running okay. This is a ice maker Frigidaire. Help , please.

What is the model number?
And how old is the fridge?

First try to unplug the fridge for 5 minutes and then turn it on again and see if we reset the system.

If not then you have a bad thermostat or leaking freon, and the pressure is too low to cool anything.
