Question about Brother MFC 420CN All-In-One InkJet Printer
I had the exact same problem and this is how I fixed it. You have dried ink in the print head and cartridge slot and you need to loosen it up.
Remove the black ink cartridge and if you feel inside the slot, you will notice that it is dry and sticky.
Get a paper towel and soak it in warm water. Dab the wet paper towel in the empty cartridge slot and you will notice that all of that dried ink is now on that paper towel, continue to clean the inside of the slot, then dry it with a dry paper towel.
Run a couple of more cleaning cycles, then start to print. At first you will only see black lines, then run a couple of more cleaning cycles and try again. With each of these cycles you will notice that the text will become more and more clear until finally, it will print perfectly. Hope this helps.

You probably have a plugged print head or the black ink feed is plugged.
Depending on how bad it is you may find it easier or even cheaper to replace the printer.
If this is a ink caused problem you stand a chance of fixing it if you are patient but you might go through half an ink cartridge to get it working, If it is stubborn it can take 20 or 30 cleaning cycles before you see any black. You can try using household vinegar (dissolves the dried ink) on a qtip or lint free paper towel to try to clean the print head. To do this you remove the ink cartridge and very gently rub the towel with the vinegar on the print head. This might require you to move the print head to one side so you can see the actual print area (where the ink comes out). Keep doing this until the towel starts to come clean ie not as much ink coming off. Then run a few print cycles and if this works your printer will print as good as the first day you had it.
The next stage would require filling a old clean ink cartridge with vinegar and running cleaning cycles. Usually can be pretty messy and you should rethink buying a new printer but will really clean things out.
It is also possible that the print head has picked up clay or paper lint from the paper and this has hardened like a cement. That means replacement.

I ran this process two months ago when the printer was 4 months in use.
Try running through the manual cleaning process for the print heads.
3-choose ALL. If that doesnt work try cleaning BLACK only.
when the cleaning finishes the machine will go back to standby mode automatically.
see pg 172 in users manual under routine maint.

SOURCE: My Brother LC61, bought in
This is common problem with Brother Printers. I am going to assume you are using Non-Brother branded ink cartridges. Brother cartridges have a cleanser in the ink that most generic cartridges don't have. This in turn causes the jets to clog and not allow ink to pass through them. The fix is to go buy a couple of Brother cartridges and do a cleaning with those cartridges. You may spend some money doing this as a cleaning wastes a lot of ink, but it will clean the injection lines and fix the printer. You could also consider buying a new printer. I know this is not the answer you were looking for, but it is the true answer. I just bought a new printer due to this fact.
