Question about Wherify Wireless Wherifone G560 Gps Locator (Pink) Phone GPS Receiver

Wherifone internal airbag?

We bought a Wherifone (new but open package) on eBay for our kids to share so they can always call home. We activated it online, and put it on the charger overnight. In the morning, we unplugged it and left it unattended for about 8 hours, turned off. When we next looked at it, something like a silver airbag had puffed up inside of it, splitting the exterior body of it along the seam between the front and back. My wife saw it first and asked if I had prised the thing open to see the circuitry, which of course I hadn't, but that's how it looks. Only the outer body around the antenna stayed together, the rest of the seam is split and you can see into the phone best from the bottom. There is what appears to be a power wire (red and black) coming out of the "airbag" on the bottom end that is connected to a plug near the interior portion of the charger plug. My wife immediately wanted to poke the bag with a small needle so we will be able to close body of the phone again, but I asked her not to. Of course we did anyway eventually, and it released air with just a tiny pin *****.

My two questions are: What in the world is the airbag? And have we ruined our new device?

That "airbag" is the lithium battery that has overheated and expanded. It is defective send it back after you take pictures of it.

Airbag precautions

I worked at a salvage yard for a while. During that time I pulled hundreds of airbags. I thought I'd share a few things.

I've provided this as a supplemental reference. The precautions are applicable to handling all airbags. It provides important additional information you need to be aware of when working on or around SIR (Supplemental Individual Restraint) airbag systems. It lists the potential dangers of doing so and the appropriate precautions against accidental premature deployment.

Precautions for working with and handling airbags: Take these Seriously!!!
  • Alway wear safety glasses.
  • Control the environment - no kids, pets, people horsing around.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. After you are done, make sure no one is inside the vehicle when you reconnect the battery. If your vehicle has an anti-theft system, you'll need to get your activation codes to reset your sound system.
  • Do not use solvents to clean your airbags. They may ignite if accidentally deployed. Use only a damp cloth.
  • Airbags are sensitive to heat in excess of 190 degrees F. Store them accordingly.
  • Airbags are sensitive to impact - handle them carefully
  • Airbags are sensitive to static electricity - ground yourself, Spray the seat and rug with fabric softener (anti-static - ever heard the term 'static cling')
  • Wires for the SIR are bright yellow, the connectors are labeled.
  • In addition to forward mounted sensors, there can be sensors in the dash.
  • Disconnecting the battery alone is not enough, the diagnostic module can retain a firing charge.
  • Do not use voltage testers or VOM's on SIR wiring.
  • Do not haphazardly disconnect airbag components
  • Be safe
  • Be aware

Disable the system:
  • Turn the wheel to the straight ahead position
  • Lock the ignition and remove the key
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable. Be advised, this alone will not render the system safe. The diagnostic module (DERM) can retain a charge
  • Remove the airbag fuse (refer to fuse block cover for location)
  • At the bottom of the steering column locate the Airbag connector. (Yellow wire, yellow conduit)
  • You may need to remove the sound insulator panel beneath the instruments to access it
  • Disconnect the plug
The system is now disabled. That does not mean you can let your guard down. It means that you can now continue working around the system with a higher degree of safety. Continue to observe all safety precautions. Airbags should be handled with caution at all times.

Be safe
Mike

For the IQ America doorbell (mine is a DW2860), the diode that was packaged was a 1N4004. Search for it on eBay. They are very cheap.

How to Replace Air Bags for a 1999 HondaAccord

Hey there Henry,

Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope everyone is ok.
I worked at a wrecking yard where I pulled hundreds of airbags. I want you to understand, they can be dangerous if handled improperly.

Some warnings before you begin. Take these Seriously!!!
  • Be safe
The procedures are pretty simple

Drivers Side:
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Loosen and remove the retaining screws from behind the steering wheel. Rotate the wheel as needed to access the screws. You may need to purchase new retaining screws in advance to install the new bag.
  • Return the wheel to the straight ahead position.
  • Lift the airbag assembly out and disconnect the wiring connector from the rear of the unit.
  • Unwrap the new airbag (carefully).
  • Connect the the wiring connector and seat the airbag into the steering wheel. Be sure the wire doesn't get pinched.
  • Install the new retaining screws and tighten them securely.
Passenger side:
  • Loosen and remove the passenger side dash retaining screws
  • Move it downward to release the retaining clips and remove.
  • Unscrew the airbag retaining screws along the edge of the airbag.
  • Move the airbag assembly downward the release it fom its mounting pegs.
  • Remove the airbag from the dash, disconnecting the wire as soon as you are able. I believe your model has mounting guides, if so save them.
  • If there were guides, place them back into the mounting frame.
  • Position the airbag over the mounting frame and reconnect the wiring connector.
  • Mount the new airbag, securely tighten the retaining screws.
  • Remount the dash and screw it back in.
  • Make sure nobody is in the car
  • Reconnect the battery.
All done

One more time, be serious, be careful, be safe.

I hope this helps
Mike

Airbags....

New bolts can be purchased from the dealer or found in a wrecking yard. What I recommend is that you ask the dealer what bolts belong there and find a match elsewhere. You may save a few bucks that way.

I'm concerned as to why your airbags blew. The sensors that activated your airbags in the first place may cause your new airbags to activate as well. Be very careful. I strongly suggest that you consult a professional about your situation. This can be a very dangerous job.
