Soon after turning on, lose picture, then sound - it's like it's turning itself off

Hi, docjoh:
the subject pretty much says it all... about 5 minutes after first turning it on, the picture goes, then maybe a minute or two later the audio goes. the tv clicks like it's been shut off but the red 'on' light blinks. trying to turn it back on will give you the audio back for about another minute, but with the same end result

Thanks for the offer, but I've already had the main circuit board (?) replaced. To anyone else who might be experiencing this problem: Several people suggested just cleaning the fans. I did, and it helped for a while, but it wasn't a long-term solution for me.

Check and make sure your fans are working and there is sufficiant cooling to the back of the set. Sounds like it is overheating and going into protection mode.

Picture & sound go off for 1-2 minutes, then return.

The most likely the TV has a power supply related problem.
I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet.
If by chance the TV is still under warranty, go that route.
If not under warranty and If you have some electronic experience, you can purchase a Service Manual over the internet and diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists. Usually, cost under $20.

I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.

Picture snaps off, Sound still come through.

A crackling sound could mean that the flyback's insulation has failed and it is arcing inside. If that is the case then it may stop working entirely pretty soon. Take it to a tech as soon as you can, the flyback is a pretty expensive part, however if it blows it can break the set to the point that repairs will not be worth it.

TV turns itself off after a few seconds, no picture at all

I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps
