Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I have a HP computer, with Windows XP,2002. I had Norton Antivirus 2007, via CD, added to my computer. I want to UNinstall the program. Everything seemed to go OK, --then a display that said, Setup error, & started to gather error info.,& transferred it to Symantec, it said. In my add/remove section of the control pannel,---it won't go any further, & freezes the computer. The icon, on the desktop is gone, --but the Norton Antivirus, is still listed on the current programs, on the computer. How do I get it to be GONE completely, & off my computer? I want to go to AOL, as my IP, & to add AVG, Or AVAST!, as my new antivirus,--if I can get this problem resolved. Thank You!

OK...Hope this helps...
Go to start/ run/ type regedi/ hit enter.
This will be your registry. Be very very careful in this part of your OS. A mistake can cost you a re install.
On top tool bar click on Edit/ find/ type in norton/ click on find next. A "highlighted registry entry" will pop up on the left or right of the page. Right click/ delete. Hit F3/ do the same to the next entry that appears highlighted. Continue with F3 until you see "finished searching" or like that....
Now go back and do the same thing with symantec by typing it in the find what box. You can now go to add/remove programs & uninstall these softwares. Restart & see if that helps...
For AVG or AVAST I go to Download.com and AVG is on that home page maybe AVAST is too. Good Luck...

Hi co2donjo,

It appears that your un-install didn't quite finish in its entirety, no problem try this:
First off, go to control panel and click on security, see if windows still recognizes norton as your antivirus. If not and it says you are unprotected, go ahead and download the av of your choose, however, Avast is hard to beat, its free and reliable. Follow the setup instructions. You may get a message that says "Avast has detected other av programs install on this computer-do you want to continue with install, click yes or OK. Once your av is up and running go around and delete anything and everything that says norton/symtac. There are quicker ways of deleting the norton av, but, that would depend on your level of windows expertise. You don't want to go snooping through your root directory or your root if your not clear on what to do, so, try this and see if it helps.

Thanks for using FixYa.com

Sincerely, cyyyd7

Try uninstall norton antivirus and load avira antivirus, run word program and check whether an error will come out. If no error, your antivirus might be corrupted and somehow affects your application. If error still occurs after replacing norton, uninstall office program and reinstall again.

THINGS TO DO FIRST ON YOUR BRAND NEW LAPTOP

Things to do first on your brand new PC August 27, 2007 - techtipster Bought a new computer? Before you do anything, perform these stepsfirst 1. Isolate your computer from the Internet Do not allow your computer to connect to the web until you have prepared itfor the onslaught of viruses. A study has shown there is a 50 percent chancethat a non-ready PC will be infected within 12 minutes of connecting to theInternet. So do not connect your Internet cable, and turn the wireless functionoff, either physically if there's a wireless switch on the PC, or by going to [StartMenu -> Control Panel -> Network Connections] and disabling itthere. 2. Check whether you got what you paid for Go to [Start Menu -> Run] and type 'dxdiag'. You will see a summary ofyour computer's specifications, such as the RAM (memory) and the processor.Check both of them, as well as the graphics card used inside. Does your PC havewhat the salesman said it does? 3. Decrapify your PC Most computers come bundled with advertisements in the form of "free"promotional software that clutter up your desktop and take up disk space. Justdeleting them from your desktop doesn't remove them from your PC. You have tomanually uninstall them by finding the uninstaller program for each of them andrun it. The PCDecrapifier makes it a hassle-free process by searching for theseirritating apps and taking them out for you. Best of all, it's really free!Download and step-by-step guide here. 4. Turn on your firewall Firewalls block any unauthorised intrusions to your computer. Windows XP comeswith its firewall turned off, so you have to manually turn it on by going to[Start Menu -> Run] and type in 'Firewall.cpl'. Then select the 'On' button.Windows Vista comes with the firewall turned on, while Mac and Linux usersdon't have to bother about viruses. 5. Install an antivirus program If you've bought antivirus software, such as Norton or McAfee, put in the CD and install them. If not, download a free antivirus program suchas Avast or AVGon your old computer, and transfer the files via thumb drive or CD-ROM to yournew computer and install them. Your computer is now ready to connect to the web! OPTIONAL 6. Partition your hard drive Partitioning means splitting up your hard drive - for example, if you nowhave a single C: drive, partitioning splits it up into C: and D: drives if youchoose to split it in two. Doing so enables better file management. Most people install the operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, etc) onthe first hard drive, and all the programs and documents on the second. Thatway, if you have to reinstall the OS, your files don't get lost. Why partitionnow? Partitioning a hard driveusually requires you to format the hard drive a.k.a wipe it clean of data. Sodo it now when your computer is still brand new and untouched. Step-by-step guide here (Windows XP) and here (Windows Vista). 7. Protect your startup Many programs that you are going to install in the coming days as you havefun on your new PC are likely to try adding themselves to the startup list. Thelonger the list, the slower your computer takes to get ready for use when youturn on the power. Use the free and bite-d Startup Guard program to prevent programs from adding tothe startup list without your exclusive permission. Tip: only allow programsyou want to be automatically running when you turn on the computer to addthemselves to startup.

I have a hp a288n desktop. It quit responding as it has done previously and it wouldn't turn off, so I turned it off by the power button. When I went to turn it back on it would not start. I have unplugged...

I've attached the steps needed to be taken if your computer does not turn off.
If you pc is turned off and you can't turn it on now, please provide me more informations like;
  • what is the color of your screen
  • what written on your screen
  • Can you see cursor blinking or arrow
  • Any error message displayed?
  • The HP or Compaq Logo Screens are Missing on Startup
  • When the pc stops responding, before or after Windows start up?
Steps below is to show you how to resolve the issue of the pc not shutting down.

Step 1: Using one anti-virus program
You only need one anti-virus program. If more than one anti-virus program is open at the same time, uninstall the extra software programs. Several virus scanning software on the same PC can create software conflicts. This is also true for multiple versions of the same anti-virus software. For example, if Norton Antivirus version five and Norton Antivirus version 2002 are both installed on the same PC, uninstall the older version (version 5 in this case). Use the following steps to remove programs:
  • In Windows XP, click Start , then Control Panel.
  • In Windows 95, 98, and Me, click Start , Settings , then Control Panel
  • Double-click Add/Remove Programs
  • Select the anti-virus software that you want to remove and click the Add/Remove button, or the Change/Remove button in Windows XP.
  • Restart the PC when the uninstaller has finished.
  • When the Windows desktop appears, restart the PC again. The PC should shut down and restart normally this time. If not, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Disabling Software that opens with Windows
For troubleshooting purposes, reduce the amount of software that opens with Windows to try and find out if a software conflict is occurring.

  • Open the Microsoft System Configuration software (Msconfig), remove the selection next to Load Startup Items , click OK , and restart the PC.
  • For more information, refer to Preventing Programs from Opening When Windows Starts .
    Restart the PC using Windows.
  • If the Windows still fails to close, continue to next step.

Step 3: Turning off all power options
Turn off all Windows power management options and shut down the PC as follows.

  • In Windows XP, click Start , Control Panel , and then Performance and Maintenance.
  • In Windows 95, 98, and Me, click Start , Settings , and then Control Panel .
  • Double-click the Power Options icon.
  • The Power Options Properties window appears.
  • Click the Power Schemes tab and change all selections under Settings for Always On power scheme to Never .
  • Click the Hibernate tab and remove the check mark from Enable hibernate support .
  • Click the OK button to accept the changes, and then restart the PC.
  • When the Windows desktop appears, restart the PC again. The PC should shut down and restart normally this time. Regardless, continue to the next Step to see if a BIOS update is available.
Step 4: Upgrading the BIOS
The BIOS is code that the PC uses at start up and is responsible for many things. One of those things is power management, which can get in the way of the shutdown process.

Please rate my solution.

I think my norton is downloaded wrong. I have a virus and cannot run norton

Hi mollducks, first things first. If you are using any version of XP turn on windows firewall. Click the start button & open control panel. Open windows firewall & click it to on if it is not on.
Try downloading AVG antivirus software for free at this link:
http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe Than run it. Full system scan.
After you run AVG on you're system use Norton’s remove utility to uninstall any left over files from Norton.
AVG should have caught any virus.
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
If you bought Norton antivirus software for download, go to this Norton site & click support:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/index.jsp
If it was the free download, try again to download it.
Norton should do a quick scan during installation.
You might want to keep AVG. Norton should still install with AVG already installed. You can remove AVG at any time.
Lastly, once you feel there are no virus's in you're system shut down the PC. Unplug the power cord from the PC. Open the case & gently remove you're memory DIMM's. Wait 1 minute & re-install them. Make sure they are correctly connected. Double check all data & power cables are securly connected & close the PC & plug the power cord back in. (By doing this you remove any virus that may be hiding with in you're memory).

Good luck mollducks!
Feel free to ask if there is still an issue with norton after running the above sugestions.
