I am about to take a WD1600JD hardrive out of one PC and put into a newer PC as a slave hardrive. What should the poistion of the jumper be. Thanks

This is a SATA drive, and they don't use master and slave jumpers. They are serial devices, and each SATA drive is connected to its own motherboard connector. The master and slave jumpers are only on the parallel interface drives (with the wide data cable), since two drives could be used on the same motherboard controller. All you need to do is install the drive, plug in the power and data cables, and Windows will assign the drive a new letter.

I have a Seagate ST3100011A drive 100 GB that I am trying to use as a slave. I removed the jumper per the manuel but I cannot get the drive to format. I have tried command prompt and device manager then...

You need to partition the disk first. Microsoft has a lengthy description of how to do this in XP at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000

Vista is at:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Create-and-format-a-hard-disk-partition

Vista & Win7 are almost the same procedure.

I don't get paid for advice so if this answers your problem, I would appreciate 4 thumbs.

Massage appear no hardisk found

Try the following: 1. Try replacing the IDE cable or SATA cable of your hard disk. 2. Check the power cord if it is properly seated at the hard disk. 3. If you are using IDE hard drive. Check master or slave setting. 4. If you added a cd/dvd rom make sure it is set to a slave. 5. Try replacing another hard drive. Check if it works.
Thanks. More Power. Please rate. Let me know if you need further assistance.

How do to install slave drive Seagate Barracuda 7200.9. Does it has to be to the motherboard or to a card in my computer? How do I set the pins in what order?

if y0our going to slave one hardrive you need to set that hardrive jumper into slave format....check your hardisk if where pin should it e placed...usually there is a direction where to set the jumper for slaving the hardrive.

Wont read ext hard drive...says bad sectors...

Have you tried goggling for data recovery software. There are a lot of free ones if you had that to your search. But, I've used several paid for ones that worked. I'd try to trail versions to download and first see if can read the drive. If it can't the next thing I would do, is to dismantle the case around the hard drive, and take out the physical hard drive and switch the back pins to Slave, and add it to your computer. (make sure you have your main drive as Master) Then as a slave drive you have a lot more options to recover data.

Good Luck

How to detect the hardrive?

Hi,

setup the first drive as slave ( sometimes No Jumper ) then the furthest away drive as Master.
If this fails, and you have 2 IDE Slots on the motherboard. ( Primary/Secondary ) Put 1 drive on primary as Slave. And DVD Rom As Master ( same Cable ) Then put second drive On Secondary IDE Slot. ( Set As Master Or Slave )
If none of these solutions Work For you, check to see if Both Channels are activated in the Bios.

Thankyou For Using Fixya.

If one of the jumpers shorts two pins and the other jumper is a single pin short, remove the two pin jumper. The single pin jumper should be located on the pin at the far upper right corner. should be set as a slave at that point.
