Some receivers with video switching have the option to stay on the video source when you switch to a different audio source, others don't. I have a Yamaha that will do this while my Kenwood will not because the CD and DVD input are one in the same. I guess it depends on what input you are using for your music input. If it's a DVD input it makes sense that when you switch the audio the video follows. Try connecting your audio source to an audio only input (say the CD input) and see if that will allow you to do what you want.

Have a Harmon/Kardon AVR 20. The right channel produces an extremely weak signal when playing music through any input. (Yet, once I hit the "test" button, the sound hits each speaker equally). Help!

It sound like it could be the pre-amp that is playing up. The picture you posted shows that the pre-amp can be listened to separately. All you need to do is pull the two black jumpers out. And connect a separate power amp to the "pre out" sockets. Leaving the other two not connected. If the weakness is present you will know it's in the pre-amp and not the power amp stage of your amp.

When we watch football, we can't hear the refs on the field. Also during halftime we can't hear the music. Some random things get cut out.

do you have a center channel speaker hooked up? Most voices come through the center channel. I would imagine the surround processor would put the refs on the center channel.

I have a JVC TH-S3 surround sound system and would like to know if I can l watch television in surround sound as i can watch dvd's and listen to the radio in surround sound. thanks

Yes you can get simulated 5.1 surround sound from your TV as well as radio. Just switch the JVC surround mode to Pro Logic II movies or music In some systems it will display only PLII.
Just connect the TV audio out to the JVC Aux input at the back ( red and white sockets ).

Yamaha rx-v1600. I am failing in my attempt to get sund out of zone 2 speakers. I have the 2nd zone speakers hooked into surround zone 2/3. In primary zone I only have center and surround back as my fronts...

After 6.5 hours, I am now listening to music outside on my patio using my rxv-1600!
Connect your speakers to the Presence Zone 2(3) output on back. Then power up amp and select zone 2 on front of amp. Nothing will happen, because as I found out, you must route an input to zone 2 or 3. Which is cool, because you can listen to something outside that is different from your inside.
You select what to route to the zone by pressing Zone Control button, just right of zone 2 and 3 button. While you see red zone light blinking, rotate input select knob to prefered input, i.e. radio/cd/aux/etc... also, you can adjust volume by pressing zone control and turning up the volume knob, only while ZONE light is blinking.
hope that helps, i know i was frustrated figuring that out!

When listening to the fm tuner on my yamaha htr 6060, will all 7 speakers still make sound? i' having trouble getting sound from the other speaker connections other than the L and R front connection.

analog fm is broadcast in stereo you would need to use a simulated surround setting to have sound come out of your rear and mid surround speakers.
your manual says the default setting for fm broadcast is:
Radio Listening TUNER MUSIC ENHANCER
7ch Enhancer
Select this SCENE template when you enjoy FM or AM
radio programs.
make sure you unit is not in straight mode try pushing the straight button on the front of the receiver let us know if more troubleshooting is needed.

Cheers!

check to see if the DIRECT icon is illuminated on the panel...if so, cancel the DIRECT function. This is only a thought, also check HDMI settings as well as optical mappings...

Assigning inputs or selecting the type of vidio stream i want to use for my dvd player.

Not sure if I understand completely, but if you want to watch a source on DVD then then it needs to have its a/v outputs connected to the DVD inputs on the rear of the receiver.

The best way to do this (if you haven't done this already) is to enable the Dynamic Range Control. This neat little setting makes the difference between loud and soft to be not so much, making soft sounds (like talking in your case) louder and something like explosions not so loud. This is also called Midnight Mode on some receivers. To enable this setting, grab your remote and turn the receiver on. Press the "Receiver" button, then hit the left arrow on the remote until you see something along the lines of "Dynamic range control" pop up on the LCD (should be the 8th setting). You probably want to set this to "Max", but you can also select "Mid" if you find that Max does too much.

If this still does not work, you can bump up the relative volume of the center channel a bit (or a lot of bit). Hit the "Standard" button on your remote, then "Test Tone" until "C" or "Center" comes up on the LCD. Then hit the "Level +" button a few times, making the center channel a little louder. Listen to it a while and adjust it to your liking.

The combination of these two settings should get you where you want to be. By the way, do a search on your favorite search engine for something like "manual Pioneer VSX-D512" and you should be able to download a manual from somewhere (it looks like Pioneer no longer hosts the manual on their site). Hope this helps!

How do I get video input from one source and audio from another?

I am confused and might be overlooking something obvious here. SO PLEASE do not think I am being disrespectful! IF you have everything connected properly, then your television is a separate device, independent of your Sony STR. You should be able to watch the picture with the Sony STR turned OFF. In turn, you should be able to LISTEN to the Sony STR with the television turned off. Although it isn't a lot of fun, it might be best to DISCONNECT all the cables (not your speaker wire) and go through the process of reconnecting everything.
