Turned the TV on this morning and you can just barely make out anything on the screen - and what you do see are distorted colors when you can make out writing etc. Sound is ok. I thought maybe something happened to the brightness/contrast so I went to adjust those - problem is you can't see the menu on the screen. Any advice before I go shopping?

Yes,the tv have a colors wheel and it is the cause of these problems.Humming noises, motor noises, picture flashes black&white or colors pictures within the pictures. The colors wheel,is dying or already dead.Hire a tv tech. replaced the colors wheel, will solved ur tv problems.
You either have a bad CRT or a Shorted Red Output IC/Transistor. One other possibility is if
someone turned the Screen Control down if it is accessible from the back of the set.
Hope this helps,
with a flashlight at the back of the set often times there is an adjustment you can make WITHOUT having to open the set!!!
look for a little hole in the back of the plastic cabinet labeled SCREEN then with a flat screwdriver holding only the plastic handle, insert it into the hole and SLOWLY rotate until the screen brightens up until it is watchable.
This is compensating for age in the picture tube. you may get a few day or a few more years! of a much better picture.
If you start seeing some thin lines on the screen then back off you have gone too far. Do this adjustment with the brightness and contrast controls on the menu turned up all the way.
it is also safe to play with the focus adjustment right next to the screen if thing seem a little blurry. you will need two people one to watch from a distance for best picture.
It is hooked up to Direct TV. When I change the channel on the TV to another input it looks fine but without a picture.
as you do not see tint in another channel means your color section is ok
it is due to video or luminance section.
do you happen to have any speakers of any size within about 3 feet in any direction of the tv??
move them if so,
I have large speakers about 5 feet from my tv at home and i still get some distortion once in a while with red and dark green streaks.
To get rid of the white lines look at the place where you turned the control. It should be called the screen control, turn down the screen control counterclockwise till the white lines just go away. If the picture is still dark, you will need to have this set serviced as there is a problem in the crt driver board, or the power supply board. good Luck
