Question about Brother Office Equipment & Supplies

We use our fax-1840C machine for black/white only, never for colour. we have installed both b/w and all 3 colour cartridges, but quite soon the fax says the (unused)colour cartridges are empty or dry and it will not print in b/w until the colour cartridges have been renewed. it is very annoying and expensive to keep having to install new colour cartridges to print in b/w. is there a solution so we can use and replace only b/w cartidges ?

advice not really helpful. i want to print in b/w only, not colour, but the machine will only print in b/w if the black and all 3 colour cartridges are installed and contain ink.The ink from the colour cartridges soon dries up even when never used. so it is costing me unnecessary money to keep buying the colour cartridges which I do not use or need. was the machine designed this way, or is there a solution ?

thanks, but a misunderstanding, sorry -- i am talking about my fax, a brother model fax-1840C, not my hpofficejet6210 printer which is fine.

thanks for responses; it seems this machine will only print, even in b/w or mono, if all 3 colour cartridges are also installed and contain ink. expensive !!

Here's a bit of insight for the experts who don't understand how inkjets work:

all inks are consumed even if you are only printing in black. each time the machine is used and to protect the printheads, inks are used to lubricate and keep the heads in prime condition.

If you don't use the color ever, then I would get a new fax machine that only prints in black as it will be much cheaper to replace a larger black cartridge than smaller ones which the larger one will also last longer otherwise I would print in color once in a while just to get the system think the color ink is good. If you take out the bad color cartridges, just put them back in and maybe you will have to reset the system but they shouldn't be preventing the machine from working.

let me know if this makes sense or if you have questions about it

Hi,
It depends on what printer you have.I am using an HP PSC 1610 All-in-One, and with that one you can print using only the black cartridge. In order to allow you to do this, go to the "start" menu on your computer. Then click on "settings" or "control panel." Navigate your way to your "devices" and then "printers." Right click on the printer icon for your printer and click on "properties." Then click on the "color" tab. Check the box that says "grayscale" and check the box that says "black cartridge only." This will allow you to print using only the black print cartridge in your printer without a color cartridge. At least this works for my printer. The process should be the same for yours, or something similar. Hope my answer helps. While we are on this subject, does anyone know how to print with only the color cartridge inside the printer? I haven't figured out how to do that yet.I think in your machine its not possible. Ypu need to fill or insert color cartridge also.. Try above steps once.. Hopefully it should work.. Please let me know.
Thank you......

I have a brother intellifax 1840c (which is great, by the way). I need to change the ink cartridge & have no idea how to get into it. Is there a latch or button to help open it? Please help.

1 Close the document support and the document tray.

2 Lift the top cover to the open position until it locks securely into
place. If one or more ink cartridges are empty, for example Black, the
LCD shows Ink Empty Black and Open Cover.

3 Pull the ink cartridge hook toward you and remove the ink
cartridge for the color shown on the LCD.

You can find the procedure on changing the ink cartridges in the user manual, page 12-25.

I have a Brother 1840C fax machine. I have lost the manual. I need to change the ink cartridges and do not know how to do this. I need a graphic and instructions.Thank you

Just open the top cover of the printer, there will be 4 cartridges on the right side. they are locked in, all you have to do is release the little latch and pull out the cartridge, then replace it. I have the book, to that printer, but my printer is tour-up. Had to buy another one. Hope this help.

Brother 1840c -problems after changing cartridges

If you are using new cartridges, the problem is in the sensors. The ink sensors get dirty and malfunction. Remove the ink cartridges and thoroughly clean all the surfaces, Allow to completely dry and replace the cartridges. This should cure your problem.
p.s. I usually use alcohol on a Q-Tip to clean

I have changed all of my ink cartridges;but the black mode will not print, the color is working fine.

After replacement of each ink cartridge the machine will display "Did you change?" for each colour. If one or more do not come up with this message you may have a problem.

Check each cartridge for the black flag is moving up and down with the liquid in the ink cartridge. If it stuck firmly tap it on a table until it is freed.

Another problem if the black sensors in the ink supply unit are pushed back it may not read the cartridges. If visably they look pushed back (usually only two) I can let you know how to correct.

Finally the mainboard in the machine can fail causing some inks not to read but you can not resolve this yourself.

Brother Intellifax 1840C

Brother Intellifax 1840C the only one thing you can to do is stick masking tape around the cartridge, there is an switch, when you take off the cartidge the switch is off, when you put it on the switch is on, this is out = "off" and in= "on", do the same with the other colors.
greetings.
