Question about HP Pavilion dv5020us Notebook

1 Answer

Hard Drive What is the largest HDD I can put into my HP Pavilion DV5000? It came with a 120GB 4200RPM drive, and HP support says that's the max for my system, but I'm having a hard time believing them, especially since I saw a reply in this forum to someone else with a dv5000 series system that the response was that they could go as high as 400GB. What are the potential problems that could happen for putting in a hard drive larger than HP says can be used? I don't want to burn up the system or do damage but I'd love a bigger drive if it's possible. Please note, the only option for my product in the categories was dv5020us. Mine's a dv5000z cto (custom order). Specs are as follows: Windows XP Media Center Edition v5.1.2600. Service Pack 2. Bios version F.54. AMD Turion 64 ML-37. Memory: 2.00 GB installed (max: 4.0 GB). This info came from the Help and Support Center's System Information screen.

I have externals. I need more space on the internal drive so I don't have to bring the external with me when we're moving back to the US. Going to be without our stuff for about 2-3 months during transition and need to pack as little as possible. Every little bit counts. We are into photography too, so that's the biggest reason for needing more space. Thanks for the thought, though.

a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

You gotta a bad hard drive and it's not recognized when the computer is powered up. The ZE2000 uses good old 2.5", 9.5mm(height) ATA/IDE drives and the stock drives are of the slower variety (4200rpm rotation speed) - it's probably easy enough that anyone can get a new one (and a faster one of 5400rpm or 7200rpm) and replace it within a minute or two. Best source for these things is by mail: buy 'em on Amazon or eBay and in general, don't pay over 50 cents per gigabyte or you'll look like a tourist.

HP puts out its service manual online, so I'll just pass along the link (this may or may not be for your exact model, but for hard drive replacement, it's all the same):

HDD replacement is page 110, I believe. Removing and installing a hard drive should take no more than 120 seconds.

Of course, you'll have the load Windows after the installation, and that'll take roughly 60-90 minutes.

Can i replace the the hp pavilion DV4000 SERIES 80GB (4200 RPM) HARD DRIVE with any 7200 rpm notebook hdd?

You should be able to replace it, but you will need an adapter lead from laptop hdd to motherboard as the laptop hdd will be smaller and you may need a kit to fix hdd into 3.5" bay. Both are readily available.

hello, here's a part of the spec from the hp website. It looks like you've got 256mb on board memory and one expansion memory slot in which you can fit a 1024mb card, giving you a max memory of 1280mb (1024+256).
Hope this helps!

What is the max hdd capacity I can install in a HP ZD8000 laptop?

Your computer uses ATA drives which topped out around 250MB simply because manufactures switched over to SATA drives. It is a pain to change out disks on laptops since you can only have one internal drive. You then have to reload everything.
Here is one I found: Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD2500BEVE 250GB 5400 RPM 2.5" ATA-6 Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive
  • 250GB
  • 5400 RPM 8MB Cache
  • ATA-6

I'd consider one of the external USB disks instead to store your data, pictures, etc. You could then put it on your desktop or on a new notebook.

Hard drive replacement

Hi there, I have an HP nx6110 and it had a WD 60GB 4200 rpm IDE, I bought a Seagate 80GB IDE Hdd and it worked fine. The only think you should be careful is to check if you need a SATA Hdd or IDE Hdd, but I think it's a SATA.
