Hello, i just saw your post.. i know this reply is so late, and you might have probably found a solution. But i will still give you some guides to help you figure this out.
(1) First and foremost, make sure your connections are set up properly (exactly as in the manual). most HDTV'S require a DIGITAL OPTICAL CABLE to be connected from TV to receiver. Read the manual on your TV and see the required wires for external audio
(2) go to your TV audio settings. Get to the speaker option, and turn it off ( this assumes your expensive TV is an HDTV). By turning it off, you signify that you want the sound option to come only from the speakers.

just plug your satellite and dvd player in to your tv. and simply take an extra set of red, white, yellow wires and us use the red and white wires to connect fron your tv output to your surround sound system's input. now you should have surround sound for everything included local tv stations from your tv antenna
Hi I have an RCA Truflat TV and a philips Surround sound dvd all in one system and a jvc dish system. I have had my surround working up until my nephews messed with it and hooked up a wii system to it. Now I get no sound on my surround sound and I have tried rearranging the cables but I can not get any sound from the surround sound and for the life of me I can not rember how I originaly had it set up. can you help?
If you want a replacement for the TV itself you have two ways to go about it. One is contact the manufacturer and get one from them. The other is you can get what I have that I swear by. I have a logitech universal remote that works everything. This one cost me about 90 dollars but it works everything with one touch button. I saw watch TV and it turns on the TV my directv and my surround sound all at the same time. If I press watch DVD it will change the input on the TV turn on the DVD player and switch the surround sound. You program it online with a USB cable that comes with it. It will work basically anything except a Playstation 3 as they are blue tooth. Let me know what the outcome is and if this was helpful to you. Good luck and have a great weekend.
Have you tried to hook up your DVD player directly to the surround sound system? If you direct the sound through the TV, it has to pass several circuits and the quality will be lover. Just connect it right away to your sound system. :-)
