Assist with an Operating System start issue? PC is a Gateway GT5228

Need some help:

My friend's pc is a Gateway GT5228.
For a few days now his computer won't load the Windows XP OperatingSystem. It will show the loading screen, quickly flash a blue screen, and then restart (per the default setting, ones we can't go into thesystem and change because we can't get into the OS).

I looked up some stuff and at first it seemed to be a hard drive fail.So followed the instructions I found to do a check on the system, andit came back that the hard drive was okay.

Everytime we try to load in normal mode, it gives us that bluescreen-restart go around. When we try ANY Safe Mode option, it scrollsa bunch of text and then restarts again. I'm not sure what the problemis exactly, and since the hard drive came back okay I'm trying to finda better solution then just doing the system recovery since he hasfiles on there that he needs, and it seems like that recovery woulddelete said files.

Can anyone assist on things to try? I tried copying my personal harddrive via Acronis and then loading the system from the external USB,but since I have a dell it didn't seem to work properly.

Any suggestions?

The following will re-install windows without destroying your stuff but you must follow it exactly !!!!!!!

  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
  3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. To Repair Install, press ENTER

PC is - To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER." src="" width="15" border="0" /> do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
  4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
  5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!
  6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
  7. good luck beergut707

How can i reset my gateway gt 5228 to factory settings?

Hi blainholdens,
You cannot delete everything on your hard drive if it is your main operating system drive. If you don't have a CD with which to install your operating system you will have to install the hard drive into another PC as a secondary drive, open 'My computer', right click on your hard drive and select the 'format' option from the drop-down menu.
Formatting the hard drive is effectively erasing all data from the disk and making it active and preparing it for starting new.

Best wishes,

My gateway gt5228 media center series is unresponsive. it will not let me intiate system restore, it will not let me start ini safe mode, i cant run the restore disc, and it will not let me restore it...

If you're lucky, the only issue is a failed hard drive. Install a new drive then use another computer to download the correct Operating system image and burn it to either disk or usb.

If you have purchase the Operating system from Microsoft you can call them and get it activated . If you have installed it on your own using a un licensed copy You will have to purchase the Genuine copy of Windows to get a activation key. You can try contacting ( These people helped me to Activate my copy of windows when I had a similar issue. They charged me something like $20 and the issue was fixed in a while.

Freeze on gateway logo. does not respond to any of the function keys (F8, F10, F2...)

Possible a bad hard drive. Do you have a restore disk? If not you might have to reinstall the operating system. They do make recovery disk, you might want to check with a local computer shop to see if you can purchase a recovery disk,,,,Darren

A lot of times the master boot record will become corrupted and it cannot find the operating sysyem.

Gateway gt5228 issues

Open the C drive with the same way as typing C: in adress bar. Then search for a "autorun.inf" file
During this search the hidden files search option must be enabled in advanced options.
See if any file comes as below:
If yes ,then delete the file(only delete the exact file written above)

I am not sure that this would work or not but try once.
