Hi Platinum,

You may need to remove the other operating to complete the correct booting process. All you need to do boot your system to the working windows. You may either select one of the operating system. When you are already in your desktop screen. Please follow the instructions below.

for XP
1. Click Start button, go to run then type msconfig in the box. A pop up window will show up on the screen.
2. Look for Boot.ini
3. Click on "set as default" button.
4. Click on apply then close and restart your system.

Jeff

Hi

Virus or Trojans can run some process that keeps running in background. This not only harms the computer, but also prevents the pen drive from formatting as it shows that the drive is in use. Remove and re-insert the pen drive, don't double click on drive and cancel autorun operations if it starts automatically. Run a virus scan on pen drive, this will help fix the issue. Now format the pen drive.

Reformat a Disk Drive without an install dsk

Power on your computer and wait for Windows to fully load.

Click the "Start" button and select "Control Panel."

Click "System and Maintenance," scroll down and click "Administrative Tools."

Double-click "Computer Management." If you are asked for permission to perform the action, click "Continue."

Click "Disk Management" on the sidebar. This will give you an overview of the available disks on your computer.

Right-click the "C" drive and select "Format." Click "OK" and the process will begin.

Once the process is finished, you will be unable to use your computer until the operating system has been re-installed.

To do this, you will need to use a Windows Installation Disc or a USB flash drive containing Windows.

Dual Boot

You may have overwritten your boot.ini file.

  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  • On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
  • Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the operating system that you want to start when you turn on or restart your computer.
  • Select the Display list of operating systems for check box, and then type the number of seconds for which you want the list displayed before the default operating system starts automatically.

To manually edit the boot options file, click Edit. Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not modify the boot options file (Boot.ini), because doing so may render your computer unusable.

If both OS's are the same, you should be able to copy and paste the line for XP and simply change the drive letter to the location of the second OS.

Adding 250gbhd to double my storage.Hdd in bios but not in "my computer"

Is this an internal or external drive? If it is an internal drive, you need to partition and format the drive. For Windows XP and later, this is available in the drive management service. In Windows 7, click Start > Control Panel > System and Security. Look in Administrative Tools and click on Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions. (Make sure that you have logged in as the administrator.) In the lower section of the window, the new hard drive should show (probably as Disk 1). Select the correct drive (it will probably say unallocated space). Click on Action > All Tasks to find the option to format the disc. If this drive will be used with the current computer or only with the recent Windows OS, format the disc in NTFS. Mac's have a similar utility but HFS is their current file system. If the drive will be used on multiple computers with different OS versions, format it in FAT32.

Other programs (Partition Magic, Partition Manager) will give you more options for formatting.

If this is an external drive, looking for the drive in Disk Management will let you check if the OS finds the disc but has a problem with the format.

I hope this helps.

Good day. I bought this Netbook with Windows 7 installed. I need to format and reload Windows XP as I have software that I need to use that only works with XP, I have an external "USB CD Drive"...

Hi neil720...

Installing the external CD Player...
You will go and start up and install Windows XP by doing he following:
Plug in your external CD drive, and let windows install it into the system...
Once the CD is ready to go, shut down the computer.
***************************************************************************************
You will first need to format your hard drive, I will give you instructions on how to do that.

1...To format your hard drive and install XP:
To set you computer back to factory fresh settings you will need to format the hard drive and install the XP operating system and the drivers.

1.Format the hard drive:
You do this by double left clicking on "My Computer",then double left click the main drive (normally C drive).
When the window pops open, you will choose "Format"
Keep in mind that once you format your hard drive you will loose all your files, programs, pictures, etc that you installed since the computer was new.
So make your back up on a portable hard drive, thumb drive, etc.
2. Once the formatting of the hard drive is complete you will need to install the XP operating system along with the drivers.
You will now insert the CD's into your external CD player starting with #1 first and continuing until all has been installed.
After all has been installed, shut your computer off and restart.
That will bring your computer back to Windows XP factory new condition as far as operating is concerned.

I pluged in two hard drives in my gateway DX4720-03 but they dont show up on my computer, they do show up in device manager

If these are brand new drives, you likely need to tell Windows to partition them and assign a drive letter. You don't mention your operating system but i'll give you basic instructions that is pretty much the same in most versions of windows.

Right-click on My Computer and select Manage. When Computer Management opens, go to Storage and select Disk Management. On the right hand side of that window you should see your drives. If it is merely a problem of the drives not being partitioned / allocated yet, you likely will see them at the bottom right hand side and show unallocated. Just right click on one of the drives and you should have an option to format the drive, or to change drive letter. If you format the drive, windows should now see the drive. Hopefully this helps point you in the right direction.
