You need:

1. a wireless adapter (working).. you adapter needs to have drivers that go with your operating system.. if you have problems on this area you need to go to the adapter manufacturer website and dowload drivers for your device according to your operating system (ex. if you have a xyz model made by company z and you are using windows vista... you need to go to company z, look in support for you to download driver and look for your device model xyz and look for a vista driver... you may need to install the driver first before plugging your device in (if your wireless adapter device uses a usb)
2. a wireless access point (a router)
3. if your router is configured with defaults (not recommended for security reasons) you're pretty much set, but if your router is configured (recommended) you need to know:
a. the SSID (name of your router/network),
b. wireless key or passphrase and
c. method of authentication set on your access point (wep, wpa, wpa2)

for a general reference of what you need and how it's suppose to work read the following article

to set up your computer to access a wireless router follow this steps

Wifi modem is not recognized

Try recycling the wireless router by unplugging the power to it and wait 20 seconds then plug the router back in. Sometimes that is all it takes.

After recycling the router if the adapter still does not show any wireless networks make sure you don't have the wireless radio turned off in the software that runs the adapter.

If all fails, try the adapter in another usb port if it is a usb adapter.
You could reinstall the adapter's software and driver.

HOW DO I SET UP NETGEAR WIRELESS G-ROUTER FOR MY COMPAQ PRESARIO NOTEBOOK PC. I HAVE NORTON ANTI-VIRUS INSTALLED ON MY HP PAVILION. HOW DO I GET IT TO INSTALL ON MY NOTEBOOK PC?

To set up the router, you connect directly to the router with a network cable, log into the router using your Internet browser, to a code like 192.168.0.1, or similar. I suggest that you use the wizard, but be sure to change: Wireless security of WEP and access code of your 10 digit home or cell phone#, change system ID to something you recognize, change router access password AND RECORD IT, change wireless channel to 11 and avoid conflict with landline cordless phones.

With routers, you have to SAVE on each page or loose settings.

Then install the router, and look for it in the wireless connections list on your laptop. Give the access password and you should be good to go. The desktop usually connects via network cable.

I have a cable modum with a wireless router and I am not connecting to the internet - what do I do?

First make sure your modem is turned on and the lights are on. Next make sure your router is on and it's lights are on. Also make sure that your router is connected to your modem. Then make sure that your wireless adapter is on and that the drivers for it are installed on your computer and your computer recognizes the wireless adapter and the wireless connection.

You did not specify brand or model of modem or router so at this point this is the best I can do.

Also what type of wireless adapter you are using and what kind of computer. Again this goes back to brands and model numbers. If the above does not help, come back with more specifics and I'll be glad to try and help you again. good luck!

As long as the router has wireless antenna's on it or indicates it is a wireless model then all you need to do is turn on the wireless function of the router. You do this by access the router, open a web browser and try either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.0.100 one of those should be your router. Log in and go to the wireless settings. There you can enable it and configure it.

From there, as long as your laptop has a wireless network card built in, it will see the wireless network and you can just connect to it...

Thanks!

Want to use wireless without running cables

Did you load the DLink software onto your computer? If so you have to configure the DLink control Panel to recognize the Internal wireless card in the computer. You may also need to take the wireless card out and restart your computer, then shut it back down and reinstall the card so the computer can recognize the card and reinstall the drivers. If it cant find suitable drivers it wont install. While you have the card out look at the brand and version number and try to download software to desktop to install in case windows cant find any.If you have a cat5 (ethernet) cable you can go hard wired till you get the wireless working.
