Hard drive and dvd rom stopped working after changing to cd-rw, the ide cables have to unplugged to get any response from hard drive or dvd rom

I have checked all cables, the dvd-rom was set to master and I made sure the cd-rw was set to master as well, after installing the cd-rw I booted the machine up which by the way was running fine, OSX 10.2.8 the boot up froze on me so I reset the boot up and then nothing. After putting the dvd-rom back thinking that it had something to do with the cd-rw still nothing. To get the dvd-rom door to open I have to un-plug the ribbon cable, same as hard drive, to get it to spin up properly I have to un-plug ribbon cable. I have bad feeling that the mother board is toast. Any other suggestions would be appreciated as I am new to Mac's but am A+ certified with PC's and a network administrator, Microsoft certified.

Have you done the proper connection ? Please check out the Power & Data cable inserted firmly in Hard Disk, and DVD rom, after then check out the jumper is inserted correctly.

Unplug the Ram for 5 minutes and then try to start PC. Hope this works. Let me know the status after then.

Well it's a CD-RW to start with.
That means that is 5 years old or older,
You will need to replace that old CD-Rom with a new one. When you remove it, look at the cable connector and I'll bet it's a standard IDE interface. IDE should be stamped somewhere on the CD-Rom. That means that you wont have to buy your new one from Apple for 10 times the price it's actually worth. You can get a far better one at Walmart, Costco or BestBuy. Set the jumpers exactly as your old CD-Rom, install it and problem solved.

My internal DVD-RW has stopped working ? Power Mac G5

Sounds like the DVD has broken. I would suggest either buying an external dvd drive (either USB or Firewire) or you could replace the internal DVD drive see instructions at http://support.apple.com/manuals/#powermac

Hi Paul
Just a guess. Your description says CD-RW which would suggest that it will not record to DVD. In fact a quick check of the spec for CW-8124 says it is a CD recorder/rewriter and DVD-Rom (i.e. player).
Apple did this for quite a long time, you only got the DVD recorder (Superdrive in Apple talk) in the more expensive models or in the build-to-order models.
Now you get DVD recording in all the models.
Easiest option is to buy an external recorder. (You could if you felt the urge, open the mini up and fit a new drive.)

I have a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B installed in a eMac running 10.5.6. This drive will only read Mac Install disks. No DVD Video disks and no CD-ROM disks. What can I do ?

Go to company web site and see if there is a firmware update for the unit, you may have to put it in a PC to flash it if there is no mac version.

OK. The movie industry strikes again! Your RENTED DVDs are the key.Hollywood made some adjustments to prevent the copying of the movies. So they put software to detect the kind of drives in which the movies are inserted. DVD/RW are capable of copying a movie, so they are disqualified as playing devices. Have it be a normal DVD player you won't be facing any troubles.

Can you try installing the new burner as a slave and the zip as the master?

Had a pc once that refused to boot at all with a new DVD burner in it, alongside a DVD-ROM. The burner was replacing a CDRW drive, swapped the drives master and slave settings over and it worked.

IMac G4 freeze on new HDD fresh install

Who did the installation? Seagates are highly recommended. Ive replaced countless hard drives and optical drives in those models. It appears the machine is having some sort of kernel panic, or the video card is not properly displaying graphics on the monitor. You should be getting some kind of icon on the display upon boot up. If the machine has anew drive with no OS, then you should be getting the flashing question mark/picasso face folder. You should start up from the optical drive..cd or dvd, and walk through the installation process. The drive need not be formatted before you install, because you can do that from disk utility before the installation.

The most common reason this may happen with this model, is users for get to set the MASTER jumper on the drive. Seagate barracuda's are set to CABLE SELECT fresh out of the anti static bag. Ideally the machine is supposed to recognize this, but if the drive has nothing on it, or no OS, it will not take heirarchy over the optical drive. Both the hard drive and cd drive are on the same bus, this is why the IDE ribbon cable runs to both. You need to open the machine and verify that drive is set to MASTER. The diagram is on teh top of the drive, but with SEAGATE's, if your'e looking directly at the jumpers, IDE pins on lefts, molex power on right, it should be all the way to the left.

ALso, Being comfortable is good, I am myself with 98% of machintosh systems out there, but this mopdel is really compact, and you need to make sure the airport cable is not strained, the on board ram stick does not come loose, and the LVDS monitor cable does not get tugged on. Also be careful of the ground wire ands other loose cables when reassembling the unit, as not to pinch any of them.

I hope this helps, and keep me posted.
