You trying to do a system link? If so then you just need to use the network cable you got with the xbox360 put one end in your computer and the other in your friends xbox. This will link your two xbox's without the need of going through the router. If you want to use the router to connect each other you will have to set up the network IP addresses that are set for your network manually. I can't tell you how to do this as I don't know anything about what network setting you using.
If you want to connect to your friend over xbox live to play together sign up for select join xbox live from your avartar screen and sign up for xbox live you both will need an xbox live gold account. Once your gold accounts have been set up add each other as friends and then you or your friend can invite each other to games just remember that you both need a copy of the game you want to play in any case.
Form your Xbox 360 you need to be connected to the Internet by a straight LAN line or wirelessly. You can test you connection by going to the setting screen on your Xbox 360.
Once connected to the Internet for your Xbox 360 go to your main account screen and find the tab that says "Join Xbox LIVE" click on that link then follow the simple instructions that the Xbox LIVE will provide. At this point you should have a name in mind for your gamer tag.
Xbox 360 LIVE has several different options available for memberships. They are a monthly, 3-month and 12-month membership accounts. I would recommend a simple one month account if you just wanted to check out the features offered on XBOX 360 LIVE. If your an avid gamer and love to play games online with friends, the 12-month Gold membership is the way to go.
Once you've completed the process of joining Xbox 360 LIVE, they will send you a confirmation email confirming your membership. Now you can log on to Xbox 360 LIVE and start doing this like customizing your avatar and playing online multi-player games.
go on dashboard, look for join xbox live, fill in all spaces and valid email address, when it says join now dont accept and will offer you a free month if you havnt had xbox live on console click on that and you can play online games,if you have modern warfare 1 or 2 or world at war then these are the best ones to play online.happy gaming
The xbox 360 requires several ports to be forwarded to it in order for it to completly establish hosted connections. Less ports are required if you are simply playing on somebody elses connection. The ports below need to be forwarded to your xbox. It is easier to control if you give your xbox a static ip address. You will have to look up your router to figure out how to forward ports to a specific ip address. Good luck.
When you insert a game, there is usually a multi-player or live-play selection.... make sure you are signed into the profile which the xbox live account is registered to. some games are a little more confusing and explain in the game manual how to play live.
if you want to play online, with other people i am assuming? then what you would want is xbox live. you do have to setup a stable internet connection in order to connect to the internet*. and also you do have to pay a membership fee in order to stay in xbox live.
* and if you want to connect xbox live, you need a cable or dsl connection, either you need an ethernet cable or a pre-tuned wireless usb that is made only for the xbox 360. and also, you would need a cable/dsl company that is accepted by xbox live. and then go to the xbox 360 dashboard, then, click "join membership",
setup an ethernet connection either directly, or with a router/hub, then go the system settings, and click, "computers" and then click connect. but this path way is only to create a connection to the computer.
